Jam is a classic souvenir from Karuizawa. Nakayama's Jam is a long-established store founded in 1905 (Meiji 38) by its founder, Johei Nakayama, who learned how to make jam from foreign missionaries who visited Karuizawa. The jams, which have been handed down for over 100 years, are made using only granulated sugar and seasonal fruits. Characterized by the natural gentle sweetness of the ingredients, they are delicious not only with freshly baked bread, but also as a sauce for desserts and dishes.

There are over 30 different jams available, ranging from the classic strawberry, Kyoho grapes, Karuizawa rhubarb, and flavors that allow you to experience the bounty of the Shinshu earth, such as mulberry, mountain peach, currant, and cranberry. It's hard to decide which one to choose, but if you're going to start with a bottle, we recommend the Asama blueberry jam, a Karuizawa specialty. With just the right amount of acidity and mellow sweetness, the flavor spreads in your mouth and goes perfectly with black tea.

Karuizawa continues to preserve the food culture left behind by the missionaries who developed the area as a summer resort. Karuizawa Delicatessen is one such example. Since its establishment in 1980, the hams and sausages made using an open-fire smoking method taught to them by German craftsmen have been a Karuizawa specialty loved not only by locals but also by people visiting their vacation homes. At the store, ham, bacon, and other items are cut to order. Each item can be purchased in 100g increments, so you can buy a little bit of each and compare them. If you can't decide what to choose, we recommend the "Assortment A Set," which includes two types of wieners, two types of sausages, bacon, and loin ham.
