In Atami, the vivid deep pink "Atami Sakura" blossoms begin blooming in January every year. In addition, Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms also reach their peak in March, so you can enjoy cherry blossom viewing twice in Atami, from winter to early spring. Here are some recommended cherry blossom viewing spots in Atami where you can enjoy the cherry blossoms.

It is said that "Atami Sakura" was brought to Atami by Italians in the early Meiji period, along with lemons and dates. It is known for its very early flowering period, blooming in January at almost the same time as Okinawa's Kanhizakura (winter cherry blossoms), and is loved as an early-blooming cherry tree, attracting many tourists who visit Atami to see it.
The beautiful Atami cherry blossoms, with their large individual flowers and deep pink color, give visitors to Atami a sense of the early arrival of spring.

Atami cherry blossoms usually bloom from January to early February. One of Atami cherry blossom's characteristics is that it has a very long flowering period because two types of buds, early flowering and late flowering, form on each branch. While regular cherry blossoms fall within one to two weeks, Atami cherry blossoms continue to bloom for over a month, allowing you to enjoy the beautiful cherry blossoms for a long time.

The Atami Sakura Itokawa Cherry Blossom Festival is held when the Atami cherry blossoms are in full bloom. It is held mainly along the promenade of the Itokawa River that runs through the center of Atami City, and is filled with events such as street performances and music performances by bands. During the festival, the cherry blossoms are lit up from the evening, so you can enjoy the cherry blossoms at night.

In Atami, you can enjoy not only the early-blooming "Atami Sakura" but also the "Somei Yoshino". The Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms reach their peak in March every year, the same as the flowering season in the Kanto region. During this period, the "Sakura Festival" is held at Atami Castle, and the cherry blossoms under the castle are lit up at night, creating a fantastic sight.

Other famous spots for Somei-Yoshino cherry blossoms include Atami Castle, where the "Sakura Festival" is held, and Himenosawa Park. There are hiking trails, making it a great place for a picnic. It's a little far from the Atami Station area, but it's also recommended to visit by car.
