The Kawaguchiko area is a place where you can enjoy a panoramic view of Mt. Fuji and the Fuji Five Lakes, as well as other natural attractions. There are many cherry blossom viewing spots, and you can see a wide variety of cherry blossoms, including rows of cherry trees with the snow-capped Mt. Fuji in the background and views of castles. We will introduce 7 recommended cherry blossom spots, from popular spots that you should visit at least once to viewpoints.
1Fuji Omuro Sengen Shrine
A tunnel of cherry blossoms adding a touch of elegance to the approach to the shrine

Located on the shores of Lake Kawaguchi, this shrine is associated with Takeda Shingen. In spring, the grounds are filled with around 100 Yoshino cherry trees, mainly around the main approach, and are breathtakingly beautiful. From early to mid-April, the cherry blossoms are a delight to the eyes of visitors, and a Cherry Blossom Festival is held to coincide with the peak viewing period. The final day of the festival is an event day, where outdoor tea ceremonies are held. You can enjoy cherry blossom viewing with a Japanese atmosphere while sipping matcha tea.
The Yabusame ritual held every year on April 29th is also well worth seeing. If you're lucky, it will coincide with the cherry blossoms blooming, and you'll be able to see the match between the rider and the horse as they gallop briskly through the arena.

In addition, the Fuji Kawaguchiko Cherry Blossom Festival is held every year in mid-April during the cherry blossom season. The popular tourist spot, Oshino Hakkai, is a spring-fed pond whose source is the underground waters of Mt. Fuji. From around April 20th through Golden Week, we recommend enjoying the cherry blossoms along the nearby Shinnasho River. The walking path that stretches along the bank has a tranquil atmosphere, and you can see about 200 cherry trees over a 400m stretch from Okamaike Pond, one of the Oshino Hakkai, to around Omiya Bridge.
The varieties are mainly Somei Yoshino, Fujizakura (official name: Mamezakura), Yamazakura, Yaezakura, etc., which are widely distributed around Mt. Fuji. With Mt. Fuji in the background, it is a great spot for photography.

An elegant collaboration between cherry blossoms in full bloom and a famous castle

Kofu Castle (Maizuru Castle), built by order of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, has opened part of its ruins to the public as Maizuru Castle Park. It is a place of relaxation for local residents and is also popular as a famous cherry blossom viewing spot in the spring. In the park, you can see about 160 cherry trees, including Somei Yoshino, which bloom from late March to early April, as well as Higan and weeping cherry trees. The view from the observation tower, Inari Yagura, is recommended, and the cherry blossom scenery surrounding the stone walls is also popular.

5Takeda Shrine and Takeda Street
A row of cherry trees brightening up the area associated with the Takeda clan

In spring, the grounds of Takeda Shrine are colored with about 20 cherry trees. Furthermore, the row of cherry trees along Takeda Street, which connects the shrine to Kofu Station, is also one of the best cherry blossom viewing spots in the city. The row of Somei Yoshino cherry trees stretches for about 2km, creating a spectacularly gorgeous sight. The best time to see them is from late March to early April, but depending on the weather, you may be able to see the cherry blossoms until April 12th, the day of the Takeda Shrine Annual Festival. On that day, a portable shrine and the Takeda Twenty-Four Horse Procession start from the shrine and parade through the city, including down Takeda Street. The combination of the rows of cherry trees and samurai in armor is full of Japanese atmosphere.

6Arakurayama Sengen Park
The world is paying attention. Cherry blossom scenes that allow you to enjoy the essence of Japan

A park that spreads out at the foot of Mt. Arakura, located to the north of Fujiyoshida City. With the arrival of spring, about 650 Somei-Yoshino cherry trees bloom in full glory, making it one of the most famous cherry blossom viewing spots around Lake Kawaguchi. Many visitors come to the Chureito Pagoda (five-story pagoda), located at the top of the stairs in the park, to enjoy the cherry blossoms with Mt. Fuji in the background.
A recommended viewing spot is the observation deck just north of Chureito Pagoda. From about halfway up Mt. Arakurayama, you can see Chureito Pagoda and Mt. Fuji through the cherry blossoms in full bloom, and enjoy a spectacular view of the three elements that symbolize Japan. In recent years, a photo of this view has been featured on the cover of the Michelin Green Guide Japon, making it extremely popular with foreign tourists.
The Arakurayama Sengen Park Cherry Blossom Festival is held in conjunction with the cherry blossoms, with stage events and food and drink booths set up, adding to the excitement in the park.

This tourist spot covers an area of 2.4 hectares and offers a direct view of Mt. Fuji. The Fuji Shibazakura Festival is held every year from mid-April to late May, and visitors can enjoy the sight of approximately 800,000 moss phlox, the largest in the Tokyo metropolitan area.
Shibazakura is a perennial plant native to North America that grows in clusters on the ground and has flowers resembling cherry blossoms, about 1.5 cm in diameter. The garden is home to seven varieties, including popular varieties such as the deep pink "McDaniel Cushion" and the sparsely populated purple "Oakington Blue Eye," and is enveloped in a variety of colors including red, pink, white, and purple. There are also plenty of photogenic spots, including Mount Fuji with its remaining snow, Ryujin Pond, and an observation deck where the shibazakura fits in the view all at once. Visitors can enjoy taking commemorative photos at any spot of their choice.
