10 Recommended Wineries in Yamanashi (Katsunuma, Enzan, Kofu) where you can enjoy tours and tastings

Yamanashi Prefecture is one of Japan's leading wine-producing regions. There are many wine spots, ranging from small wineries that take pride in their natural wines to large-scale wineries that offer facility tours and tastings, and even vineyards where you can stay overnight. Why not enjoy these wineries in your own style, where you can experience the highest quality whether you are buying, learning, or tasting?

The underground cellar and vineyards are spots that only winery tour participants can enter.

Chateau Mercian's predecessor was the Dai Nippon Yamanashi Wine Company, founded in 1877 (Meiji 10), which is said to be Japan's first private wine company. It has now become one of the top wine companies in the country, with the Katsunuma Winery located in Koshu City, Yamanashi Prefecture. In addition, the company's own "Jyonohira Vineyard" in the Katsunuma area began trellis cultivation in 1984 with the goal of growing the highest quality Cabernet Sauvignon in Japan. "Chateau Mercian Jyonohira Ortus," made from grapes grown here, is the brand's flagship label and has been well-received both in Japan and abroad.
Also, at the "Visitor Center" attached to the Katsunuma Winery, you can enjoy tours (fee required) of the winemaking process and facilities.

Tastings at the cafe start from 100 yen for individual items and around 700 yen for sets (3-4 varieties).

You can taste over 20 types of wine at the tasting counter inside the Wine Gallery. The tasting sets are themed, making them easy to choose from even for wine beginners, and are highly recommended. While the themes change seasonally, there are always about five sets available, including selections only available at this winery and labels that have won awards at domestic and international competitions.
The menu also includes light snacks that pair well with wine, and on sunny days, you can enjoy them in the "Wine Gallery Garden," a lawn area adjacent to the tasting counter.

It's great that they have themed tastings, such as comparing European varieties and Koshu varieties! The wine museum is also very well-equipped.

A traditional winery founded in 1937 (Showa 12). With the motto of "making wine that reflects the climate of Katsunuma," they handle everything from grape cultivation to winemaking.
They place particular emphasis on wines made using "Koshu," a grape variety native to Japan. Their flagship label is "Arga Blanca Isehara," which won a silver medal at the IWC (International Wine Challenge) 2018, one of the world's largest wine competitions.
Also of note is "Arga Blanca Brillante" from the same series. It is a dry sparkling wine made using the same traditional method (in-bottle secondary fermentation) as Champagne.

In addition, the winery tour "Staff Course" offers a 2-hour and 45-minute experience that includes a mini wine lecture on the history and cultivation of "Koshu grapes," a guided tour of the vineyard, and a tasting. You will also learn about food pairings, making wine feel much more accessible after participating.

Our top recommendation is Koshu wine, crafted with a focus on the terroir of Katsunuma

Located a 1-minute walk from the winery, this is a 2-hectare estate vineyard where grapes are grown in harmony with nature.

A winery that crafts wines reflecting the terroir of Katsunuma. Grapes from our own vineyards are grown naturally without fertilizers or chemical pesticides, resulting in a gentle flavor overflowing with fruitiness. Our flagship wine, "N Koshu," is a series made using grapes from our own vineyards, fermented in barrels with natural yeast found on the grape skins, and bottled unfiltered, leaving a lasting impression with its fruitiness and long finish. With an annual production of only around 1,000 bottles, it is a rare and limited item. You can also encounter unique wines that reflect the flavors of the Katsunuma land and the winery's personality, such as the "Kurambon" series, which pairs perfectly with meals, and the "Kurambonbon" series, which is fruity and sweet like candy.

It is said that they named it "Kurambon" after the conversation between the crabs in Kenji Miyazawa's fairy tale "Yamanashi." The explanation was easy to understand, and it made me appreciate the depth of wine all over again.

Utilizing the unique soil of the land, each bottle is crafted under the theme of "honest wine," offering a gentle taste that brings out the natural flavors. Its delicate and enduring palate pairs well with Japanese cuisine, comfortably accompanying everything from daily life to special occasions. Highly recommended is the white wine "Chateau Jun Koshu," which boasts a history of consecutive awards at the Japan Wine Competition. It features a gentle spread of pear, quince, and citrus aromas, and is a semi-dry wine that you will want to enjoy throughout the year.

In addition to purchasing wine, you can also enjoy a 3-wine tasting flight (weekends only) at the counter inside the shop.

The direct sales stand offers 6 to 20 types of our own wines depending on the season. Our most popular item is the "Jun Sparkling White," made from 100% Koshu grapes. On weekends, we also offer a tasting set where you can sample three different wines, allowing you to compare them and choose your favorite. The compact space, where you can feel the passion of the winemakers, is another one of its charms. You might even find limited-edition labels available only locally or seasonal wines, making it a fun place to stop by and browse during your travels.

From the left: "Kizan Sparkling Traditional Brut" and "Kizan Wine White"

Located in Enzan, Koshu City, in the northeast of the Kofu Basin, this family-run winery is dedicated to "community-rooted winemaking." With a history dating back to its founding in 1930, the winery uses only grapes grown in the Higashi-Yamanashi region—one of Japan's leading wine-producing areas—centered around its own vineyards, to create wines with excellent fruitiness and balance. The "Kizan Wine White," made from 100% Koshu grapes, is a satisfying bottle with a crisp acidity and the astringency characteristic of the Koshu variety. It pairs perfectly with Japanese cuisine and is easy to drink as a mealtime wine, allowing you to savor a flavor that reflects the character of the land.

At the counter, you can sample some of the wines, and it is possible to compare several varieties, focusing on their standard labels. While not flashy, this is a winery with a devoted fan base thanks to its careful craftsmanship and approachable nature. A traditional brand leading the Japanese wine world

From the right: "Chateau Lumiere" (red) and (white)

A prestigious winery representing Japan. Since its founding in 1885 (Meiji 18), the winery has operated under the philosophy that "authentic wine comes from authentic grapes," cultivating grapes using grass-cover farming that harnesses the power of nature, with the goal of creating world-class wines. Many of its labels, such as "Chateau Lumiere," which has been served at imperial banquets, are highly acclaimed both in Japan and abroad.
Winery tours are available in 40-minute and 1-hour formats. Guided by staff, you can see the vineyards, fermentation building, stone fermentation tanks, and underground cellar. Notably, the stone fermentation tanks, built approximately 120 years ago, are registered tangible cultural properties designated by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. Located underground, the interior is kept at a low temperature thanks to the cooling effect of the granite. The shop sells "Ishigura Wine," fermented in these tanks, in limited quantities.

You might even encounter premium wines at the shop

About 40 varieties of our own wines are lined up, and depending on the season, you may also encounter limited-edition items.

After the tour, head to the restaurant where you can enjoy "Yamanashi French" cuisine made with local ingredients, or visit the wine shop. There is also a tasting corner where you can sample over 20 types of wine for a fee.
Additionally, from late August to late October, a tasting corner for "Sturm," a wine in the middle of fermentation, is available. It has a fresh taste that is slightly sparkling and low in alcohol, with a subtle sweetness and refreshing carbonation. This wine, which can only be enjoyed at the shop, is available only while supplies last, so we recommend visiting early in the season.
A wine festival is held in late October. You can enjoy back-vintage wines and food stalls from famous local shops, as well as live music and game events.

The production building at Mars Hosaka Winery is open for tours. There are five types of tanks, including wide ones for red wine and slender ones for white wine

Mars Wine was the first wine made from Yamanashi-grown grapes to win a gold medal at the Japan Wine Competition (formerly the Domestic Wine Competition). It was also selected as the wine for the luncheon hosted by the Prime Minister's wife at the 2008 Toyako Summit.
Following the Mars Yamanashi Winery in Isawa Town, the Mars Hosaka Winery opened in 2017. It stands at an altitude of 500 meters, overlooking the Kofu Basin.
The winemaking process at the winery utilizes a "gravity flow" design that takes advantage of the elevation difference of the slope. This system allows the grapes and wine to move using natural gravity, which reduces stress compared to pumping them, thereby preserving the original characteristics of the ingredients and resulting in rich, flavorful wine packed with deliciousness.

With prices starting at 200 yen per glass, they also offer trendy items such as wines made using the cold maceration method, where grapes are fermented after being kept at low temperatures, and orange wines, so it is recommended to try them at the wine bar before choosing your souvenirs.
