From local gourmet to Western and Chinese cuisine: 6 recommended lunch spots in the Sendai and Akiu areas
Sendai, which flourished as a castle town, is a city that thrives with both historical charm and urban vitality. While strolling around, you can encounter a variety of gourmet foods that will enhance the enjoyment of your trip, such as "ryanban noodles," which are said to be the origin of chilled Chinese noodles, and "adult lunches" that pack classic Western dishes into one plate. We will introduce lunch spots where you can discover new charms of Sendai.
1Chinese Restaurant Ryutei
The skill of a professional chef shines through in this chilled ramen, said to be the origin of chilled Chinese noodles.
This Chinese restaurant was founded in 1931 (Showa 6). Its specialty is the "Ryanban Noodles," which was invented by the first owner and is said to be the origin of chilled Chinese noodles. The toppings, including jellyfish, steamed chicken, roast ham, cucumber, roast pork, and shredded egg, are served on separate plates, and each ingredient is carefully handcrafted to bring out the best in the ingredients. The special soy sauce sauce is made with citrus juices, such as lemon and orange, to soften the strong acidity of the vinegar, resulting in a refreshing and elegant sweetness.
A variety of a la carte dishes that continue to evolve with the times
While cherishing traditional flavors, the restaurant has continued to evolve with the times, with each successive owner incorporating their own taste sensibilities and ideas into the dishes and improving the recipes. "Although our food is popular, we want you to enjoy the carefully crafted flavors that are created using techniques that only professionals can master," says the fourth-generation owner.
The menu offers a wide variety of dishes, including noodle soup, fried noodles, rice dishes, and dim sum, and daily set meal sets and dim sum sets are available at lunchtime. Be sure to visit and try the exquisite dishes that the owner has painstakingly prepared.

Enjoy kaiseki cuisine with attention to detail, even down to the tableware and presentation
This kaiseki restaurant is quietly located down an alleyway away from the bustling arcade street in central Sendai. Guests can enjoy luxurious Japanese cuisine in a sophisticated, high-quality space. The restaurant's appeal lies in its ability to offer local dishes, such as sashimi made with seafood from Sanriku, which is procured and prepared daily, and thick-sliced beef tongue seasoned in-house. Even the presentation and serving tableware are meticulously designed, and each meal is filled with a colorful array of dishes. A wide selection of sake brands is also available, making it a great choice to pair your meal with a drink.
Enjoy a special lunch in a sophisticated Japanese private room
The moment you step inside, you'll find yourself enveloped in a Japanese atmosphere. There's a small waterfall and pond, and the restaurant has a tasteful Japanese atmosphere that recreates the backstreets of Kyoto. The seating is luxurious, with sunken kotatsu tables overlooking the garden, as well as table and tatami seating, all in private rooms. The restaurant is popular with tourists and locals alike, as you can enjoy exquisite cuisine in a calm, private space. Taste Tome City's local dishes, "Aburafu Donburi" and "Hatto Soup"
A restaurant serving local cuisine from Tome City, located in the northern part of Miyagi Prefecture.
The famous "Aburafu Donburi" is a local B-class gourmet dish from Miyagi Prefecture that uses deep-fried gluten instead of the pork cutlet found in katsudon. The thick aburafu soaked in a sweet and salty homemade sauce combines with the mellow flavor of the egg to create a satisfying yet healthy bowl of rice.
Hatto soup is made by boiling hatto, a type of rice cake made from kneaded wheat flour that has been left to rest for several hours, in a soy sauce-based broth. The chewy texture of hatto is addictive once you try it.
There is a wide variety of menu items, including soba noodles, rice bowls, and set meals made with local ingredients.
Founded in 2010, the restaurant was opened by the owner, who is from Tome City, with the desire to "spread local cuisine." Their specialty dishes are aburafu donburi (fried gluten rice bowl) and hatto miso soup, and they also offer a wide range of other dishes, including soba noodles, rice bowls like katsudon (pork cutlet bowl) and tempura donburi (tendon), curry, yakisoba (fried noodles), and set meals. Many local customers visit the restaurant to enjoy the carefully prepared dishes made with Tome City's abundant ingredients, including Tome-grown Hitomebore rice and vegetables.
The spacious interior is bright and calm, with sunlight streaming in through the large windows, making it an easy place for anyone to come alone or with their family.

Delicious curry made with plenty of vegetables from local farmers
This traditional Japanese Restaurant is located in the naturally rich Akiu hot spring. They serve dishes made with fresh vegetables delivered to the restaurant every morning from local farms.
Our recommendation is the colorful "Yellow Curry with Plenty of Vegetables." Made with 10 different spices, including turmeric, cardamom, and coriander seeds, it's a spicy yet mellow, rich dish, with herbs, coconut, and stir-fried chicken. The accompanying vegetables, such as onions that are carefully cooked for 90 minutes, change with the seasons, with root vegetables being the main focus in winter.
Enjoy the sweets Experience to Akiu
The restaurant, which was renovated from an old house built in the late Edo period known as "Nozokiyashiki," is marked by its distinctive large red roof. The high-ceilinged interior, with its original thatched roof, retains the traditional Sendai chest of drawers and Shinto altars from that time, while incorporating modern interior design to create a space that blends old and new.
Be sure to check out the sweets, which offer Experience only found in Akiu. The "Akiu Quarry Chocolate" is a white chocolate-based crunch inspired by the "Akiu Stone" with its distinctive pattern that was once mined in this area. It is broken with a wooden mallet. It's a must-try dessert.

5HACHI Akiu hot spring store
The popular "Adult Plate" allows you to fully enjoy the restaurant's signature flavors.
Founded in 1979 (Showa 54) as a small Western restaurant in Natori City, we deliver modern Western cuisine based on recipes passed down through the generations.
We recommend the "Adult Plate," a hearty meal packed with classic Western-style dishes. It features two signature dishes: the Neapolitan, which won the Grand Prix at the first "Kagome Neapolitan Stadium" competition (2103) hosted by Kagome Co., Ltd., and the golden ratio hamburger steak. The dish with hot spring egg is only available at the Akiu hot spring branch. You can also enjoy it in different ways, such as mixing it with the Neapolitan.
The charming interior is filled with nostalgia
With the desire to "create a restaurant that will remain in customers' memories," attention has been paid to every detail of the restaurant's construction. The interior has a nostalgic atmosphere that evokes the warmth of wood, the carefully set tables, and the original background music by Sendai-based singer-songwriters Takahashi Takaaki and Saito Megumu brings a special feeling to everyday life.
Currently, they have six stores in Miyagi Prefecture. Aiming to be a store that is rooted in the local community, they offer a wide selection of local alcoholic beverages, including those from Akiu Winery, Nikka Whisky, and Great Dane Brewing, which has a brewery in Akiu.

6TERROAGE AKIU
Enjoy the unique wine and food pairing that only a winery can offer
Restaurant is located in Akiu Winery, which is involved in everything from grape cultivation to wine brewing and sales. With the motto of "pairing wine and food," the restaurant is also popular for its dishes that pair perfectly with wine. On sunny days, the "picnic lunch box" served on the terrace makes for a pleasant lunchtime experience. For those who want to enjoy wine, we also recommend the "winery antipasto," which includes a selection of nine appetizers. It can also be enjoyed as a lunch with bread and soup.
A winery that conveys the hopes of reconstruction and the blessings of Tohoku
Akiu Winery was opened by the owner with the aim of using the power of wine and food to contribute to the recovery from the earthquake. The winery occasionally hosts markets and dinner events inviting local producers, offering Experience rooted in the local community.
The store also has a shop where you can purchase wine and locally produced processed foods. We recommend tasting and comparing wines made 100% from their own vineyards, wines made with grape varieties from Tohoku, and other wines to find your favorite brand and buy it to take home. You can also watch the grapes being prepared and brewed in the brewing room through the window.
