This natural park is located on a small hill at an altitude of 297m, about 10 minutes by car from Nishinasuno Station. There are about 1,300 cherry trees, mainly Somei-Yoshino, in the park, and when they are in full bloom, the park is enveloped in a pale pink hue. During the season, many cherry blossom viewers, including families, can be seen relaxing on picnic sheets. There are also many food stalls lined up near the entrance to the park. There is a pond, a Japanese garden, and a well-maintained promenade, so why not take a leisurely stroll while you're enjoying the cherry blossoms?
If you are going by car, we recommend taking the route to the park from the "Karasumori Park Entrance" intersection on National Route 4. The road is lined with beautiful cherry blossom trees, and you can enjoy the cherry blossoms from the car window.

2Kuroiso Park
The snow-capped Nasu mountain range and cherry blossoms create a thrilling combination

This city park is located about a 15-minute walk from Kuroiso Station. In spring, it is a famous cherry blossom viewing spot, with about 230 cherry trees, including Somei Yoshino, in full bloom. In particular, from the "Fureai Bridge" area on the north side of the park, you can view the cherry blossoms with the majestic Nasu mountain range in the background, making it a spectacular spot that attracts many photography enthusiasts. The "Kuroiso Sakura Festival" is held every year from mid-April, with food stalls lined up all over the park, and the cherry blossoms are lit up at night by lighting lanterns.
Kuroiso Park is also known as a famous spot for dogtooth violets, with over 15,000 dogtooth violets growing in clusters in the "Katakuri Village" area of the park. The best time to see them is around the same time as the cherry blossoms. The sight of the bright red-purple flowers covering the slopes is also a sight you won't want to miss.
In addition, at the Shimizu Pond in Nakagawa Riverside Park, adjacent to Kuroiso Park, you can see a baby cherry tree of Takizakura, one of Japan's three most famous cherry trees, located in Miharu Town, Fukushima Prefecture, so why not take a trip there?

3The Edohigan of the temple children
An imposing giant tree estimated to be about 350 years old

This single cherry tree is located in a communal cemetery near Terako Ichirizuka, about 10 minutes east by car from Kuroiso Station. Locals have long called it Terako no Sakura (Terako's Sakura), and it is estimated to be over 300 to 350 years old. It is one of the largest in Tochigi Prefecture, with a trunk circumference of about 6.5m and a height of about 16m. The variety itself is Edohiganzakura, which grows wild widely throughout Japan, but it is rare to find one this large, and it has been selected as one of the "100 Famous Trees of Tochigi." During the flowering season, the tree is lit up by local volunteers, making it even more impressive as it stands out in the darkness.
However, please note that the location may not be identifiable using car navigation systems or map apps, so please be careful when visiting. There is a sign along Prefectural Route 178 that passes nearby that says "Edohigan Sakura Entrance," so use that as a landmark.

4Yawata Azalea Garden
The prefecture's largest azalea mecca, with approximately 200,000 azaleas.

This azalea colony is located at an altitude of about 1,100m on the slopes of Mt. Chausudake in the Nasu mountain range. During the flowering season, which usually occurs in mid-May, the plateau is covered with about 200,000 azaleas of various kinds. At their peak in late May, most of the garden is dyed bright red. The area has also been selected as one of the Ministry of the Environment's "Top 100 Fragrant Landscapes" and "Top 100 Scenic Spots of Tochigi."
There are two main walking areas in this vast park, which covers approximately 23 hectares. One is the Yahata Azalea Community, located on high ground overlooking the Nasu Highlands. There is a 360-degree observation deck where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the azaleas blooming with the Nasu mountain range in the background. The other is the Yahata Minami Azalea Community, which spreads out in lower ground. There is almost no elevation change on the walking trail, so it is recommended for families with children and the elderly.
