What are the "Four Great Edo Specialties"?
Food stalls that Edo commoners enjoyed casually
Asakusa is said to be the place where the culture of eating out first started in Edo. At the time, the four famous Edo foods were "tempura," "soba," "eel," and "sushi." Today, they may have a slightly high-class image, but at the time, they were all like fast food, and were food sold at food stalls that the common people of Edo could easily eat.
These four famous foods continue to fascinate the Japanese palate as popular gourmet foods that represent Tokyo even today, and are now traditional Japanese foods that are attracting attention from around the world. Many tourists, both from Japan and overseas, visit Asakusa in search of these delicacies.

1Sansada, the Three Deities of the Thunder Gate
A hearty bowl of oysters with the aroma of sesame oil

Located right next to Kaminarimon, this restaurant was founded in 1837 (Tenpo 8). It is said to be the oldest surviving tempura restaurant in Japan and continues to carry on the tradition of "Edomae tempura."
The recommended dish is the "Medium Kakidon" topped with a large tempura of small shrimp, squid, and scallops. The tempura is so big it spills out of the bowl, making for a very impressive appearance. The tempura at this restaurant is Edo-style, fried in sesame oil. The plump, fresh seafood is wrapped in a batter that spreads a rich aroma. It is truly a masterpiece that represents Edo gourmet.
A lively interior with a downtown feel

With a history of over 180 years, this restaurant has maintained a rule since its founding that "the owner of the restaurant must always be in the kitchen." The current owner, who is the seventh generation, continues to work in the kitchen with Staff/staff member, mainly his family. The lively interior of the restaurant is characterized by its sukiya-style design, a traditional Japanese architectural style. In addition to table seating and tatami rooms, the new wing at the back of the main building also features private rooms and a large hall for large groups.
In addition to tendon, they also offer a wide range of menu items such as tempura made with seasonal ingredients, sumptuous set meals, and snacks. They are open all day long, so you can drop by any time.

2Fresh fish and tempura Narasa
The radish tempura, soaked in plenty of dashi stock, is delicious.

Located in the Asakusa Kannon-ura area, this Japanese izakaya is popular among locals and serves a variety of elaborate dishes, with a focus on tempura.
A must-try is the "Daikon Tempura." This exquisite dish is made by first boiling the daikon radish to soak up the flavor of the broth, then deep frying it until it's crispy. You can order the tempura on its own, but we also recommend the restaurant's signature tempura platter, which includes shrimp, conger eel, kakiage, and vegetables. There is also a wide variety of other dishes on the menu, from fish dishes such as sashimi made with fresh fish delivered directly from Toyosu Market, to meat dishes such as chicken teriyaki.
After training all over the country, he opened a local izakaya restaurant beloved by Asakusa residents

The owner is a chef who has trained at traditional Japanese restaurants and inns all over Japan. He originally aimed to become a head chef at a famous restaurant, but wanted to directly experience the reactions of his customers, so he opened a counter-style izakaya in his hometown of Asakusa. Another attraction is that you can experience dishes created with free imagination by the owner, who is well versed in the flavors of various regions.
What they value is providing delicious food at low prices. Inside the store, there are rows of shochu bottles on display, which shows how many regular customers there are.One cupWhy not give it a try?

3Daikokuya
A luxurious tempura bowl topped with shrimp at a traditional Japanese restaurant

This traditional Japanese restaurant, famous for its unaju (grilled eel on rice) and tendon (tempura rice bowl), has been in business since 1921 (Taisho 10). It is a historic restaurant run by the third-generation owner, who has been working at the restaurant since he was a teenager.
The most popular dish is the "Large Shrimp Bowl," an impressive dish topped with two large shrimp. One shrimp is a head-on shrimp, so you can enjoy the rich shrimp roe. The shrimp is cooked just right, giving it a springy texture that is simply delicious. Under the shrimp is tempura made of large cut vegetables such as lotus root and pumpkin. The thick Edo-style sauce blends well with the batter, bringing out the flavor of the ingredients.
The fluffy, soft and elegantly flavored unaju is also a specialty.

Another specialty, the "unaju" (grilled eel on rice), is also a must-try. The farmed eels from Kyushu are carefully grilled to give them a plump texture. Originally started as an eel restaurant, the restaurant continues to preserve the original flavor by carefully adding to the sauce passed down from the first generation.
The rice used in the restaurant is "Takomai," one of Chiba Prefecture's three major brand rices. It has just the right amount of texture and sweetness, and even in dishes with tempura bowls and eel rice bowls smothered in sauce, you can really taste the flavor of the rice itself.
The charming interior of the restaurant gives a glimpse of the red-light district.

The restaurant is located in the Kannonura area, which once flourished as a red-light district. From the outside, it exudes an elegant atmosphere reminiscent of a traditional Japanese restaurant. Remnants of the time can be found throughout the restaurant, including parts of the rebuilt interior that were built by master carpenters at the time of the restaurant's founding. Outside the window at the back of the restaurant, there is an Inarizuka, which seems to have been protecting the restaurant since it first opened.
In addition to tempura bowls and eel on rice, set menus are also available for lunch. This is a rare restaurant where you can enjoy a leisurely meal in a calm space, slightly removed from the hustle and bustle of Asakusa.

Enjoy high-quality farmed eel with a sauce that has been passed down since the restaurant first opened

Founded in this location during the Edo period, this eel restaurant has continued to preserve the flavor that has been passed down throughout its long history. The recommended dish is the "Unagiju" (eel rice bowl), which uses the domestic brand of farmed eel "Unagi Bando Taro." The eels, which taste as close as possible to wild eels, are raised on a diet made from a blend of Alaska pollock and horse mackerel paste, and are thick and rich in high-quality fat, giving them a mellow flavor.Made only with soy sauce and mirinThe sauce has been added to since the restaurant first opened, and it is said that the owner fled the restaurant with the sauce during the Great Kanto Earthquake.
You can also enjoy a new pairing of eel and wine.

The restaurant is spread over four floors, with a large hall on the second floor and Japanese-style rooms that can be used for private rooms and banquets on the third and fourth floors. There is a river view from the window, so you can dine while looking at the Skytree.
The menu includes a course meal with around 10 dishes, including unaju (grilled eel on rice), sashimi, and fried foods. The restaurant also focuses on providing wines that go well with eel, and has a wide selection of Spanish wines that are exclusively imported by the company. You can enjoy pairings depending on how the eel is prepared, with red wine for kabayaki and white-grilled wine for white or orange wine.

5Funachu, Hanakawado, Asakusa
A luxurious "Unatoriju" where you can enjoy the two main specialties of the restaurant

This restaurant continues the flavors of "Funachu," a river fish restaurant founded in 1946 (Showa 21). Its two major specialties are carefully grilled eel and yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) over charcoal.
The restaurant's original menu item, "Red Unato Rice Bowl," is a gorgeous dish with half eel and half yakitori in a tiered box. It uses "Mikawa Mansaku," a brand of eel from Mikawa, Aichi Prefecture, and "Nichinan Chicken," a brand of chicken from Miyazaki Prefecture. The juicy flavor of the eel and yakitori, grilled to perfection, is accented by the spicy sauce.
Enjoy fragrant charcoal-grilled eel dishes in a restaurant filled with Edo atmosphere

Other eel dishes on the menu include "Golden Unadon" (golden unaju), plump grilled eel topped with gold leaf, "Silver Unadon" (silver dusted eel bowl), Hitsumabushi (battered eel on rice), and Kabayaki (grilled eel). There is also a course menu where you can enjoy everything from appetizers to sashimi, yakitori, and unaju.
The store's design and decorative lettering, which are based on an Edo concept, were written by Edo calligrapher Tachibana Uenokichi, who also wrote the lettering on the lanterns in the main hall of Sensoji Temple, and give customers a glamorous impression that is typical of Asakusa.Relaxed and easy to useIt's a shop.

<Soba>

Tempura soba noodles with rich soba broth that permeates your body

This historic soba restaurant has been in business for three generations since it was founded in 1954. It was renovated in 2017 and is now located on the first floor of a modern-looking building.
The recommended dish is "Ten Toji Soba" with two large shrimp tempura and egg. The soba soup, made with dried mackerel, has a rich sweetness and a refreshing taste. The soba noodles are made from a blend of several carefully selected types of buckwheat flour, and are characterized by their firm texture. The seasonal menu is popular, with the "Kamonanban" made with generous amounts of duck meat and available for a limited time only from October to early May.
A platter of lightly crispy tempura is a great additional dish

Along with the main course of soba, we recommend the "Tempura Platter (Shrimp and Vegetables)." The vegetables and shrimp, including eggplant, pumpkin, and bell peppers, are deep-fried to a beautiful golden brown and wrapped in a light, crispy batter, bringing out the natural flavor of the ingredients.
The soba and udon menu has about 20 types of both hot and cold dishes. The "katsudon" (pork cutlet bowl) made with soba broth is also popular. There is also a wide selection of snacks such as "tamagoyaki" and alcoholic drinks on the menu.
Enjoy soba noodles at your leisure in a relaxing, modern Japanese restaurant.

Founded by the proprietress's father, this is a warm, family-run restaurant. The proprietress, who has been serving customers since she was 16 years old, is in charge of customer service. Her strict yet friendly service creates an atmosphere that makes even first-time visitors feel at ease.
The restaurant is located near Nitenmon Gate on the east side of Sensoji Temple. The interior of the restaurant is a cozy space that incorporates Japanese elements. There may be a line during lunch hours, but it is open throughout the day, so it is also recommended for a slightly late lunch or for a soba drink.

7Asakusa Hirayama
A unique steamer made from carefully selected buckwheat flour

Located in Nishi-Asakusa, this soba restaurant has a calm, modern look. You can enjoy homemade soba noodles, which are milled and processed all on the second floor. The buckwheat seeds used are grown by farmers in Fukui Prefecture, and when selecting farmers, the owner travels around the country paying close attention to producers and even participates in sowing the seeds.
We recommend the simple "seiro" (bath). The freshly made soba noodles are so fresh that they slide easily through your lips, and the mellow aroma fills your nose. We also recommend ordering the freshly made tempura, made with seasonal ingredients and deep-fried in fragrant sesame oil.
Sobagaki: A dish that lets you directly taste the flavor of soba

Another menu item worth checking out is the "sobagaki" made only with water and buckwheat flour. It is a simple yet flavorful dish that allows you to directly experience the original flavor of buckwheat. It has a softness similar to mochi and goes down well on the tongue. We recommend trying it as is first, and then enjoying it with soy sauce, seaweed, and wasabi. The texture changes gradually over time, so it's best to eat it as soon as you order it.
Enjoy soba noodles in a relaxing space surrounded by the warmth of wood.

The owner is a chef with experience working at a famous Japanese restaurant in Tokyo. He decided to open a soba restaurant after seeing a craftsman making soba noodles while he was in New York. He spent about five years searching for a location to house a flour mill, and opened the restaurant in 2021.The interior of the restaurant is furnished with a counter, tables, and chairs made of walnut wood, creating a space where you can feel the warmth of wood. The interior and decoration, which are conscious of roundness, create a soft atmosphere that is welcoming to customers. Please enjoy the various dishes created by the owner in a relaxing and comfortable space.

Aside from the Goshiki soba, the "Cold Duck South" is popular with regulars. It is an exquisite dish of cold soba noodles topped with odorless duck meat, spring onions, eggplant, and more. This sushi restaurant is located in a corner of the Asakusa Kannonura area, which once flourished as a red-light district. If you tell the chef your preferences and budget, he will prepare a special omakase menu for you, but the most must-try dishes are the representative Edomae sushi ingredients such as gizzard shad, marinated tuna, horse mackerel, and shrimp. In addition to the fresh ingredients carefully selected, the chef's craftsmanship, which is the deciding factor in every step, further enhances the deliciousness of the ingredients. The chawanmushi, which is served with the dish, is a smooth, soup-like dish that is a deep and flavorful combination of the rich aroma of the tuna broth and the mellowness of the egg.
