5 recommended places to try Osaka's Shinsekai specialty, "mixed juice"

Mixed juice is a local gourmet dish that represents Osaka, combining the fresh sweetness of fruit with the mellowness of milk. Made from fully ripe fruit, inspired by the idea that it would be a waste to throw it away, it has been a beloved staple menu item at coffee shops since its creation in Shinsekai, Osaka during the Showa period.
Mixed juice, which embodies the merchant spirit of Osaka people, has evolved into a flavor that incorporates the individuality of each store, and is still served in many coffee shops today. Here are five recommended stores in the Shinsekai area, the birthplace of mixed juice.

The exterior of this coffee shop, which was founded in 1947 (Showa 22), was renovated in 2021 while keeping the same look. The interior retains a nostalgic atmosphere while remaining somewhat sophisticated, and the aroma of freshly brewed siphon coffee wafts through the air, allowing you to spend a comfortable and relaxing time.

The mixed juice you can enjoy here has a texture like sherbet and is made with fruits such as bananas, mandarins, and domestic yellow peaches. It has a light sweetness that doesn't linger, and you can fully enjoy the banana flavor.

The pudding a la mode, all made in-house, is also delicious.

The "Pudding a la Mode" is a popular menu item with a traditional firm pudding as the main dish, with a different theme every season. At the time of our visit, we had a tropical version that combined mildly flavored ice cream made with Okinawan mango with light and crispy coconut tuile and sweet and sour pineapple. All the toppings are homemade, and their gorgeous appearance is sure to excite.
They also sell baked goods such as cookies and financiers, which are perfect for small souvenirs. Please note that they only accept cashless payment.

Currently run by the third generation owner, this long-established coffee shop was founded in 1928 (Showa 3) and is said to be the oldest coffee shop in the New World. In addition to coffee menu items such as pudding and pancakes, they also offer meals such as curry and pilaf.
Based on the original recipe, this mixed juice has undergone minor changes and is now made without bananas, which is rare in Osaka. It is made with a mix of apples, yellow peaches, tangerines, and mangoes. Using fresh apples instead of canned apples, it has a refreshing aftertaste. It is especially delicious in the winter when apples are in season.

They also offer a morning service with toast and hot dogs, so we recommend you visit in the morning. Why not enjoy the Showa retro atmosphere of the store?

The birthplace of timeless mixed juice

This shop is a pioneer of mixed juice. It was founded in Shinsekai in 1948 as a fruit shop, and its origins date back to the idea of the first generation owner to put ripe fruit in a blender and serve it at the storefront. The deliciousness of the juice gained a reputation, and in 1960 (Showa 35) the business changed to a coffee shop. Although it closed at one point due to a lack of successors, it has made a spectacular comeback.
This mixed juice, which recreates the traditional taste, is a well-balanced blend of apples, bananas, mandarin oranges, yellow peaches, and white peaches, with a natural sweetness. By leaving a small amount of apple skin in, the refreshing flavor and aroma are enhanced.

Be sure to check out the luxurious sweets and arranged menu items too.
