Local Guide FAQ

What do you recommend in Nasu?

There are many bakeries in Nasu, but we recommend the bagel specialty shop "Bagel que-veau". The chewy bagels are made with "Yumekaori" wheat from Tochigi Prefecture, and there are about 20 different flavors available every day, so we always end up buying a lot. Also, if you have time, we recommend hiking Mt. Chausu and Mt. Asahi, which are enjoyable even for beginners.

Please tell us about some hidden spots that you know because you live there.

HIKARI SHOKUDO, a vegan restaurant in Kuroiso, is not an easy place to drop by, as it requires a reservation and is closed during the winter, but the food is so delicious and beautiful you would never guess it was vegan. I am also always amazed by the unexpected ways the vegetables are cooked. The vegetables used at HIKARI SHOKUDO can also be purchased at the unmanned stand at the nearby 1988 CAFE SHOZO. Here, fresh vegetables are lined up from the farmers who work at Hoshino Resorts RISONARE Nasu.

Where did you travel with whom last year?

Last year in January, I went on a solo trip to Taiwan for five days and four nights. It was my first time traveling abroad by myself, but I was able to learn a lot from the locals and have a rather deep trip to Taiwan.

What do you do on your days off?

On sunny days, I often go to various general stores and cafes or go to the mountains. After hiking, I always go to a day hot spring as soon as I come down. On rainy days, I like to relax at home, drink coffee, read books or play the piano.

Is there anything you always bring with you on your travels?

I want to take pictures of the scenery while I'm traveling, so I always travel with a backpack to keep my hands free. I also always bring a book to read during short wait times. Sometimes I don't read at all though. (laughs)
