Glamping – which combines the words “glamorous” and “camping” – offers a camping experience and resort hotel comfort at the same time. Those who do always return from their trips with amazing stories; and those who listen to these stories immediately feel a strong urge to go camping. But in the end, they resist the temptation. This is because, with camping, there is always a tradeoff. On the one hand, you get to spend time out in nature, enjoy barbecues, and sit around a warm fire at night with good friends, good wine, and good music. But, in between, you experience the not-so-fun aspects of camping: cleaning up after a meal, starting a fire and cleaning up afterwards, temperature fluctuations, sudden weather changes, bugs in tents, inconvenient bathroom facilities–the list goes on. These are the factors that discourage most Japanese people from camping.

What if we could expand the best parts of camping and eliminate all of the least attractive aspects? That is the luxury camping experience we sought to create with HOSHINOYA Fuji. We built cabins instead of a campground and equipped those cabins with air conditioning and bathrooms to ensure absolute comfort. We made sure a third of each cabin’s floor plan was located outdoors, to allow guests the experience of sitting by a roaring fire. We embedded a series of wooden platforms in a red pine forest–a short climb from “base camp”–where guests can participate in just about every enjoyable activity associated with camping. Every choice was made in an attempt to strike the perfect balance between luxury, comfort, and ease, and the special connection with nature experienced with traditional camping.

Design & Architecture
Architecture– Rie Azuma, Azuma Architect & Associates
At the most fundamental level, a guestroom is a place where one sleeps and wakes up. Azuma focused on creating more–a space that places the guest within nature. The moment that the guest enters, sliding open the cabin’s inner door, they are met with a majestic view of beautiful Lake Kawaguchiko, seen through the immense window separating the bedroom area and the balcony. As the cabin’s interior is minimally decorated, the view essentially becomes a part of the room. Each balcony also features a space where a fire can be lit, enticing guests to spend their time outdoors.

The public areas are designed to be discovered as guests climb up the resort’s premises from their cabins. The first structure to come into view is the beautiful truss roof of the dining hall. With its high ceiling and wide windows overlooking a red cedar forest, the hall pays homage to the openness of the great outdoors that surrounds it. It is a room that echoes with the lively chatter of guests and staff, and the sound of food sizzling at the large grilling station in the center of the room.

A short climb up from the dining room takes guests to the Cloud Terrace, a series of platforms connected with stairs, culminating at a tiny café. A wood stove in the cafe burns throughout the year, warmly greeting guests who make the trek to the top of the resort. As with the cabins, the public areas have been designed to bring guests closer to the gorgeous views and pristine forests that the location provides.

Landscape Landscape – Hiroki Hasegawa, Studio on site
HOSHINOYA Fuji is located on the slopes of a hill just north of Lake Kawaguchiko. As the resort faces south, it receives sunlight throughout the day and offers a direct view of Mt. Fuji beyond the lake. The hill, itself, is a colorful mosaic of plants, cedars, pines, and other flora. These elements make the hill the perfect location for a glamping resort.

Guests arrive at reception, located at the foot of the hill, and are taken up the hill to the resort premises. The first thing they see are the cabins, which are nestled on a clear section of the hill that offers a dramatic view of the surroundings. Cherry blossoms, fall leaves, and other seasonal elements paint the scenery in different hues at different times of the year. Further up the slope is a red cedar forest where the dining hall is located.

Ascending even further takes guests into a red pine forest and Cloud Terrace–a series of wooden platforms that appear to float among the natural landscape like clouds. Guests are encouraged to spend time among the immense, pristine trees. There are deep backless sofas that guests can lie on underneath the shelter of a curving tarp; tables where guests can enjoy a cup of coffee while soaking up the natural ambiance; and campfires around which guests can chat deep into the night. Every structure exists to emphasize the natural surroundings, while also coaxing guests into the glamping lifestyle.

Lighting – Masanobu Takeishi, Illumination of City Environment, Ltd.
The location of HOSHINOYA Fuji offers views of Lake Kawaguchiko and, even more impressively, a breathtaking view of Mt. Fuji–one of the biggest spiritual icons for the Japanese. At the same time, the space, itself, is intimate and relaxed, gently inviting guests to enjoy its natural offerings. Takeishi’s lighting takes into account both of these qualities.

The cabins feature indirect lighting that spans the length of the room, with downlights used only sparingly. A soft light spreads across the ceiling and floor, enhancing the feeling of comfort offered by the room the longer one stays. The landscape, itself, is dotted with tiny lights that only illuminate the footpaths. These lights are intentionally understated so as not to detract from the innumerable stars which are visible at night.

Cabins: A private view overlooking Lake Kawaguchiko
Unadorned concrete walls form the exterior of cabins at HOSHINOYA Fuji, giving them a contemporary façade. The cabins are located in one section of a national park. As a result of volcanic activity 10,000 years ago, the landscape of this park is scattered with craters, ice caves, and mixed forests of deciduous trees and evergreens, as well as geographic formations that once enclosed Lake Kawaguchiko. All this, untouched, is on display through the large cabin windows that overlook the scenery, with only the seasons transforming the landscape throughout the year.

Interiors are minimalist and subdued in color to accentuate the majestic views of the lake–as well as Mt. Fuji–that fill the glass wall at the far end. The bedroom and bathroom are free of excess elements to suggest to guests that staying in the outdoors is both simpler and more relaxing than they may expect. On the other side of the glass wall is a balcony that seamlessly connects the outside to the inside. It is furnished with a wide sofa that compels guests to sit down and stretch their legs out as if they were indoors, and a custom-built table with one end designed to maintain a fire at night.

Special Facilities
The Cloud Terrace is an area located at the upper end of the property.
