It celebrates the triumph of Dharma (good) over Adharma (evil). On the eve of Galungan, animals are sacrificed as special offerings, which is meant to get rid of negativity in both the Bhuana agung (the environment of the individual human being) and the Bhuana alit (the inner world of the individual human being). The meat is then used to prepare traditional Balinese dishes such as lawar and satay. The day after Galungan, people visit their families, and on Kuningan, 10 days after Galungan, the spirits will leave Earth at noon.

Kuningan means yellow and reflects the special offerings made of yellow turmeric rice given to the ancestors on this day of farewell and symbolizes man’s gratitude towards God for all the life, joy, wealth, health, and prosperity given. Most Kuningan celebrations take place in the privacy of homes, shrines of the family temples, and housing compounds.

Celebrations of Galungan and Kuningan with HOSHINOYA Bali: June 1 – 18, 2022
Penjor making
Watch as our resort staff prepares the Penjor, the tall decorated bamboo poles.
