Ms. Deer of Nara Park
Day 20 features Ms. Deer of Nara Park, appearing as our special guest.
Hello. I am Ms. Deer of Nara Park. Welcome to Nara! Are you on your way to the Nara Prison Museum, or are you heading back? My recommendation is to take a bus or taxi from JR or Kintetsu Nara Station to get there, and then walk back. It is a 20 to 30-minute walk to Nara Park, mostly downhill, and above all, it is a wonderful way to slowly soak in the historical atmosphere of the Kitamachi area. We usually live near Nara Park, but sometimes we wander further away. Just recently, one of my friends made headlines by walking all the way to Osaka! So, a trip to the museum is just a short stroll for us. I have not been inside yet, but I hear it is a very beautiful building. I am thinking of heading over there for a walk myself soon.

According to legend, the deity Takemikazuchi-no-mikoto arrived at Kasuga Taisha Shrine riding a white deer from Kashima Jingu Shrine. Since then, the deer of Nara Park have been revered as sacred messengers of the gods. They were designated as a National Natural Monument in 1957. While they rest together at night in specific areas, most spend their days around Nara Park.
