The only ingredients are pomelo peel, sugar, and starch syrup. It is made using traditional methods.

This sweet is characterized by its bittersweet taste and natural aroma. It is made from pomegranate, also known as the queen of citrus fruits, native to Southeast Asia. It is made by slowly simmering the peel with sugar and a secret syrup.
The raw material, zabon, is produced in Tsukumi City and Hiji Town in Oita Prefecture, and in Kagoshima Prefecture. In the past, the most representative Kyushu souvenirs were citrus fruits such as zabon and pomelo. In recent years, however, there has been a shortage of raw materials and the number of products has decreased, but after developing new production areas, it is said that a stable supply is finally possible. Made using traditional methods, it is a sweet that has a nostalgic feel to it.
"Pomelo Chocolate", which is only available from autumn to spring, is popular with foreigners and children. It has a milder bitterness and is easy to eat. Be sure to try this classic sweet, which is also offered in rooms at hotels and inns in Beppu.

A representative Oita souvenir. The luxurious, biro-like packaging is eye-catching.

This is a famous confectionery representing Oita that was created in 1916 (Taisho 5). It is a Japanese-Western fusion confection with a buttery biscuit dough on the outside and bean paste inside. It is moist and sweet, and even one is enough to leave you feeling satisfied.
There are two types of bean paste. The gold film is a bean paste made from chopped rum-soaked raisins, with a fruity sourness and rum for an exquisite adult flavor. The silver film is a purely Japanese white bean paste. It uses bean paste containing agar, which is also used in yokan, giving it a unique, crisp texture. You can enjoy it in either Western style with coffee or black tea, or in Japanese style with green tea.
Not only is it a popular souvenir, but it is also a sweet that continues to be loved by locals, with many households keeping it on hand.

We also recommend removing it from its individual packaging and warming it in a toaster oven for a few seconds. The outside will become crispy and the filling will become soft, giving it a freshly baked texture.

The overwhelmingly popular flavor is "Strawberry Milk," which combines plenty of sweet and sour strawberries with the rich, full-bodied taste of milk. The refreshing light blue "Ramune" with grains is a favorite among children. Seasonal limited edition flavors are also available, such as "Pumpkin Milk" for Halloween.
The store was founded in 1916 (Taisho 5). It is always bustling with locals and tourists alike, including ladies who buy kudzu popsicles while buying Japanese sweets, and children clutching coins.

This snack, invented by a long-established maker of Beppu's specialty "Toriten," is flavorful enough to be used in cooking.

This crispy snack is so delicious you can't stop eating it. It was developed by this hugely popular, long-established chicken tempura store, which opened in 1926 (Taisho 15), and uses chicken skin that is left over after cooking.
The chicken skin is produced in Kyushu and coated in the same secret batter as the Toriten served in the restaurant. After deep frying the chicken skin in a batter made from an original blend of soy sauce, garlic, wheat flour, potato starch, and eggs, it is heated in an oven. The excess oil drips off, leaving it crispy and crunchy.
Not only is it perfect as a snack or an accompaniment to alcohol, but it is also recommended to crush it finely and sprinkle it on rice or salad. If you add kabosu soy sauce, it will add a refreshing flavor and you can enjoy a taste closer to chicken tempura.

Comments Local Guide
It's delicious and not too oily, so you might find yourself eating too much. Many customers who eat at the restaurant buy it in bulk, and many even make repeat purchases.
