Beautiful bamboo crafts created by a husband and wife team
This bamboo craft workshop is run by a husband and wife bamboo craftsmen. They mainly use madake bamboo from Oita Prefecture, and each piece is made by hand, from splitting the bamboo to weaving it.
The weaving process, which requires both visual beauty and design, is a time-consuming process, but the preliminary steps of splitting the bamboo and aligning its width and thickness are also said to be extremely labor-intensive. The bamboo strips needed for weaving bamboo crafts must be uniform in width and thickness, which is an absolute requirement for beautiful, well-balanced works. No two pieces are the same, and beautiful shapes are created by carefully examining the individual characteristics of the bamboo and using the sense of touch and rich experience.
Modern traditional beauty that blends seamlessly into modern life
While valuing traditional techniques, they also create items suited to modern life. A wide variety of items are lined up, created using different types of attractive weaving, such as the "nawame-zashi-ami" used for baskets, the "nihon-yose-kikko-ami" with its beautiful and neat mesh, and the "koire-asanoha-ami" woven with bamboo strips of different thicknesses. Stationery such as bamboo pens and paper knives are also available, and are recommended as souvenirs at an affordable price.
Bamboo crafts change color to amber the more they are used. Why not go out and find a bamboo craft that will last you a lifetime, one that will also look beautiful as it ages?
