A Dialogue on Japanese-French Collaboration in Graphic Design and Museography

Completed in 1908, the former Nara Prison is a historic landmark.
The Nara Prison Museum was created within this historic building.
Its exhibitions were developed through a collaboration between graphic designer Taku Satoh and museographer Adrien Gardère.

In April 2026, shortly before the museum opened,Adrien Gardère returned to Japan.
After their final review of the exhibition, the two looked back on nearly two years of working together on this place.
The conversation begins with their impressions of the museum, then moves to what they experienced throughout the collaboration and the ideas behind it, and finally, to their thoughts on the future of museums.

Taku Satoh

Graphic Designer / Art Director

A graduate of Tokyo University of the Arts, Taku

Satoh is the creative force behind iconic designs like “LOTTE XYLITOL Gum” and “Meiji Oishii Gyunyu.” Beyond branding and posters, he is the general director of NHK’s “Design Ah!,” Director of 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, and President of Kyoto University of the Arts.

For the Nara Prison Museum, his vision as Art Director extends from the exhibitions and logo to staff uniforms and museum shop merchandise.

Adrien Gardère

Museography Supervisor

Adrien Gardère is a world-leading exhibition designer and founder of Studio Adrien Gardère in France. He has supervised exhibitions at prominent institutions such as the Louvre-Lens and the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto. In Japan, he was involved in the exhibition Reiko Sudo: Making NUNO Textiles held at Art Tower Mito in 2024. For this project, serving as the Museography Supervisor, he worked alongside Art Director Taku Satoh to oversee the museum’s fundamental concept and exhibition layout.
