Hokkaido is a large area, and the climate varies from area to area, so the best time to see cherry blossoms and the types of cherry blossoms vary as well. Siberian cherries and Chishima cherries bloom robustly in the cold northern and eastern areas, while Somei Yoshino cherries blossom splendidly in the relatively warm southern area and around Sapporo, and Yaezakura cherries reach their peak in mid-May when spring is in full bloom. Why not follow the cherry blossom front as it slowly moves north on a trip to Hokkaido in the spring?

Asahiyama Park is located next to the popular Asahiyama Zoo and spreads out over the slopes of a hill called Asahiyama. There are 3,500 Siberian cherry trees in the park, with many planted from the park's Parking to the gazebo halfway up the hill. From the entrance, you can look up at the mountains, softly dyed in a pale pink, and if you walk up the gentle slope a little and look back, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Asahikawa city beyond the cherry blossoms.
The best time to see the cherry blossoms is usually from early to mid-May, and the Night Cherry Blossom Festival is held every year during this period. Enjoy a tasteful cherry blossom viewing at Hokkaido's oldest flower temple.

With a history of over 1200 years, this is the oldest temple in Hokkaido. It is known as the "Temple of Flowers" as the temple grounds are decorated with cherry blossoms, azaleas, peonies, hydrangeas, and more each season. The hill behind the temple grounds leads to a natural park, where nearly 1,000 cherry trees of various varieties bloom one after another in spring, making it a popular place to enjoy cherry blossom viewing over a long period of time.
The contrast between the quaint thatched roof of the main hall and the ancient cherry tree that is over 200 years old is very picturesque. The most famous of these is the "Ishiwari Sakura", which is captivating with its sturdy appearance as it splits a huge rock, spreads its roots and branches, and spreads out. A cherry blossom tunnel that has been carefully preserved in the hilly town of Muroran

Muroran City is located in the southwest of Hokkaido. As its name, which comes from the Ainu word "Mo-ruerani" (small, downward road), suggests, it is a town with many hills.
Muroran's most famous cherry blossom viewing spot, "Hokoi Fujishita Sakura Namiki" is located in a residential area close to Hokoi Station, one stop before Muroran Station, the terminus of the JR Muroran Main Line. Approximately 130 cherry trees of about 29 varieties bloom, enveloping the gentle slope. Among them are rare cherry trees such as the Shiogamazakura, a national natural monument that was transplanted to Shiogama Shrine in Shiogama City, Miyagi Prefecture, after three years of permission. When the cherry blossoms bloom, lanterns are lit, creating a fantastic night view of the cherry blossoms. There are no Parking as the surrounding area is a residential area. Please enjoy cherry blossom viewing while being considerate of the local residents.

11Matsumae Park
Enjoy the flowering relay of 10,000 trees in Hokkaido's only castle town

Matsumae Town, located at the southern tip of Hokkaido, is the northernmost castle town in Japan. The only Japanese-style castle in Hokkaido, Fukuyama Castle (Matsumae Castle), had its castle tower rebuilt in 1960 (Showa 35), and offers a rare view of the Edo period.
Matsumae Park, where Matsumae Castle is located, is one of Hokkaido's most famous cherry blossom spots, with about 10,000 cherry trees of about 250 varieties. About 80% of the trees are Yaezakura, and the cherry trees of various colors and shapes bloom in a relay over the course of about a month, with early, mid-season, and late blooming. There are also many things to see near the park, including the "Three Great Famous Trees" - the "Kechimyaku Sakura" at Kozenji Temple, which is said to be over 300 years old, the "Ezo Kasumi Sakura" at Ryuunin Temple, and the "Meoto Sakura" at Tenjinzakamon Gate. It takes about two hours by car from Hakodate city, but it is well worth the trip.

12Goryokaku Park
The star-shaped, pink-bordered view is one of a kind

Goryokaku was the stage for a turbulent era from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji era. It was developed as a park in the Taisho period and is now one of Hakodate's most famous tourist attractions. In spring, about 1,500 cherry trees, mainly Somei Yoshino, bloom, attracting many visitors to view the flowers.
Goryokaku Tower, adjacent to Goryokaku, is a must-visit viewpoint. From the 90m-high, 360° glass-enclosed observation deck, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the star-shaped moat, clearly framed by a field of cherry blossoms. We recommend strolling along the promenade along the moat, or enjoying a water ride in a rowboat, and viewing the cherry blossoms from various angles. The sight of the petals that have fallen after the best viewing time has passed and floating on the surface of the moat is also beautiful. During the cherry blossom viewing season from late April to early May, the cherry blossoms are lit up with lanterns at night as the sun goes down, making for a pleasing sight, and you can spend a day immersed in the cherry blossoms.

13Hakodate Park
A relaxing garden for Hakodate citizens, overlooking the Tsugaru Straits beyond the cherry blossoms

Located at the foot of Mt. Hakodate, this park is home to around 360 cherry trees, mostly Yoshino cherry trees. The building of the "Old Hakodate Museum No. 1," which opened in the Meiji period, is preserved within the park, and the exotic Western-style building and the pale pink cherry blossoms create a beautiful contrast. The undulating terrain also makes it attractive for visitors to take photos from a variety of different perspectives. If you climb Mt. Meiji within the park, you can see the entire park, covered in cherry blossoms, as well as Cape Tachimachi and the Tsugaru Strait, and on a clear day you can even see all the way to the Tsugaru Peninsula.
During the cherry blossom viewing season, outdoor stalls are set up and night illuminations are put on, and the area is bustling with people enjoying barbecues and the cherry blossoms at night. There is also a mini amusement park with the oldest active Ferris wheel in Japan, and a mini zoo with miniature horses, peacocks, rabbits, and more, so it is recommended for cherry blossom viewing with small children.
