The Nikko/ hot spring area is a popular summer resort in the Kanto region. In addition to touring tourist spots, we also recommend planning your trip to coincide with festivals and events. In addition to festivals and fireworks displays, traditional events are also worth noting in the summer at Nikko/ hot spring. If you check the information in advance, you can participate at the right time and avoid the crowds. We will introduce mainly traditional events that are held every year.
1Mt. Nantai Climbing Festival

The Mount Nantai Climbing Festival is held for one week every year from July 31st to August 7th. It is a festival that has been held since the Nara period, where people visit the inner shrine at the top of Mount Nantai (2,486m), the object of worship at Nikko Futarasan Shrine.
During the event, the trailhead for Mt. Nantai opens at midnight, making it possible to climb the mountain at night, so if you climb during this period, you can see the sunrise from the peak. At the peak, where the inner shrine is located, you will be given amulets, a certificate of climbing, and holy water.

It is a precious event that has been handed down for over 1,200 years, and participants make their way around the lake while enjoying the cool breeze as they sail across Lake Chuzenji, which is located at an altitude of 1,269m.
Anyone can participate, but as there is a limit to the number of people allowed on the memorial boat, reservations are required.

4Dragon King Festival

The biggest summer event in Kinugawa Kawaji hot spring is the Ryuo Festival. The festival will be held for the 56th time in 2024 and is a Shinto ritual held at Goryuo Shrine to pray for safe travels and prosperity in the area.
It is held in both hot spring and Kawaji hot spring, and in hot spring, portable shrines such as the Manto Mikoshi liven up the festival. Also attracting attention is the Onnataru Mikoshi, a portable shrine carried only by women that adds a touch of glamour to the climax of the Kinugawa area. The festival closes with a large fireworks display.
