Check out the four seasons, temperature and clothing for Iriomote Island

Iriomote Island is located in the Yaeyama Islands, the southwesternmost island of Japan, more than 400 km from the main island of Okinawa. It is the second largest island in Okinawa Prefecture after the main island. Approximately 90% of the island is covered in tropical and subtropical virgin forest, making it a treasure trove of nature, and the entire island has been designated a national park. It is home to mangrove forests, which account for three-quarters of the mangrove forests in Japan, and 15 natural monuments, including the Iriomote wildcat, and eco-tours that take advantage of this precious natural environment are actively conducted.
Iriomote Island has a hot and humid subtropical oceanic climate, with an average annual temperature of about 24°C. Winters are warm, while summers are humid and typical of subtropical regions. The island also receives more than 2,000mm of rain per year, so rain gear is essential, especially during the rainy and typhoon seasons. The sun is strong throughout the year, so we recommend bringing sunscreen with you no matter the season.

Spring in Iriomote Island (March to May) Temperature and Clothing

Spring is called "Urizun" in the Okinawan dialect. As the word originates from "the beginning of moisture," it is the time when young leaves grow and the greenery of the entire island becomes deeper day by day. The average temperature in March is 20.3°C. This is the same temperature as in late May in Tokyo, and the difference between day and night is within 5°C, making it comfortable. Around the "Vernal Equinox Day" when the beach opens on each island in Okinawa Prefecture, the average maximum temperature exceeds 25°C, making it warm enough to wear short sleeves during the day. The average temperature in April is a comfortable 22°C, but summer really begins in May. "Summer days (over 25°C)" continue. Be sure to stay hydrated and take measures against sunburn.
March to early May is the best season to see Japan's smallest firefly, Yaeyama Himebotaru. The forest can be chilly on spring nights. Wear a jacket and long pants, and bring insect repellent.
Iriomote Island Summer (June to August) Temperature and Clothing

The rainy season on Iriomote Island begins around early May. Until the end of the rainy season in early June, the subtropical regions often experience sudden torrential rains (squalls), so it is essential to carry rain gear.
In June, the average maximum temperature exceeds 30°C, and the hot and humid weather continues until August. This is the time when you can enjoy a variety of Activity at sea and in the forest, and it is also the best time to see the mysterious flower "Sagaribana." This ephemeral flower blooms for just one night in wetlands such as riversides from June to mid-July, and in the early morning, the scattered flowers decorate the surface of the river.
In addition, it is important to check typhoon information frequently during July and August, when typhoons are most likely to approach. Also, because the ultraviolet rays in summer are very strong, be sure to prepare sunscreen, hats, and other sun protection items when spending time outdoors, and make sure to stay hydrated.
Autumn in Iriomote Island (September to November) Temperature and Clothing

September and October are still in the height of summer, with average temperatures over 25°C. The sun is strong and it's even possible to swim in the sea. September will be humid due to typhoons, but by the end of October the mornings and evenings will start to feel cooler. The average maximum temperature in September is about 30°C, and in October it's close to 28°C, so short sleeves are sufficient during the day. To prepare for the temperature difference between morning and evening, it's a good idea to bring a light outer layer such as a cardigan or hoodie to make your stay even more comfortable.
The average temperature in November is about 23°C. It's the perfect time to get active, such as by enjoying trekking in the forest. Also, be sure to try stargazing on Iriomote Island, the first starry sky conservation area in Japan. You can spend a romantic time immersed in the starry sky.
Iriomote Island's Winter (December to February) Temperature and Clothing

In winter on Iriomote Island, the average minimum temperature is over 15°C and there is little precipitation, so you can enjoy sightseeing regardless of the weather. In December, the maximum temperature often exceeds 20°C, so you can spend the day in thin long-sleeved or short-sleeved clothing. In January and February, the maximum temperature is around 20°C, but there are days when the minimum temperature drops below 10°C, so the temperature difference is large. It is a good idea to prepare a thick cardigan or a thin coat that is easy to put on and take off depending on the minimum temperature.
Winter is the time of year when there are relatively few tourists, so we recommend giving yourself over to the island's slow pace. Whether it's a canoe ride through the mangrove forests or a stroll along the sea to the neighboring island of Yubu in an oxcart, spending time relaxing in the great outdoors will soothe your soul and recharge your batteries.
