6 Recommended Popular Kushikatsu Restaurants in the Shinsekai Area of Osaka

Kushikatsu is a local delicacy that is always on the list of must-try foods when you visit Osaka. Osaka kushikatsu originally started with beef skewered and deep-fried. Nowadays, there are many different types, but kushikatsu = beef remains the standard. However, each restaurant puts a lot of effort into the batter, ingredients, and sauce, so there are actually many different types of kushikatsu. In this article, we will introduce a carefully selected list of recommended restaurants from the Shinsekai area, a hotbed of kushikatsu, including long-established restaurants founded after the war and famous restaurants frequented by local gourmets. We recommend visiting two or three restaurants and comparing the tastes. Most restaurants open from lunchtime, so we recommend having a drink during the day.

The light batter remains crispy even after a while.

Since opening at the foot of Tsutenkaku in 2019, this popular restaurant has been a constant draw for tourists and locals. The secret to the light and refreshing taste of their kushikatsu is said to be the careful coating of the kushikatsu with a thin layer of fine breadcrumbs, and the process of thoroughly draining the oil after frying them in a blend of lard and canola oil, using the hook of the wrist repeatedly to carefully drain each skewer. The sweet and mellow custom-made sauce, which the owner says "costs 1.5 times more than the market price," is also a unique attraction of this restaurant.
The owner has a keen sense of food and has traveled around trying different dishes in pursuit of his own unique taste.

The owner, who used to run a sushi restaurant, was recognized for his talent and started a kushiage specialty shop, and after visiting many kushikatsu restaurants, he went independent and pursued his own taste. In addition to the classic "kushikatsu," they offer a wide range of skewers, including meat, seafood, and vegetables, as well as creative skewers such as "duck and onion meatballs" and "salmon tartare," and dessert skewers such as "condensed milk strawberry."
Customers who enjoy kushikatsu hopping in the Shinsekai area often come back to eat here at the end. While watching the lively owner fry the kushikatsu one after another at the counter on the first floor, you can enjoy the light and crispy texture of the kushikatsu even after some time has passed.

2Ousho Club
The gorgeous, photogenic skewers, such as those topped with giant shrimp and salmon roe, are extremely popular.

Founded in 1947 (Showa 22), the shogi club "Osho" was reborn as the kushikatsu specialty restaurant "Osho Club" in 2019. The restaurant is known for its unique and creative skewers made with high-quality ingredients, with the giant emperor shrimp (a type of wild black tiger prawn) and the deep-fried salmon skewer topped with salmon roe being the two main specialties ordered by most visitors. The emperor shrimp's rich flavor and firm, chewy texture are beautifully accentuated by the thin batter. Served with homemade tartar sauce, this luxurious dish is like a full-course meal. The salmon skewer, smothered in a generous amount of rich salmon roe like a sauce, is also truly luxurious.
Formerly a shogi club, the building is full of history and charm

Osho Club is located in Janjan Yokocho, a retro Showa-era arcade lined with go and shogi clubs and B-grade gourmet restaurants. The wooden structure, which was originally a shogi club, has been preserved, and the pillars and furnishings, polished to an amber color, add a deep charm to the interior of the store. The old notices listing seating fees and game schedules are still there, and on the second floor there are tables with well-used shogi boards as table tops. You can feel the atmosphere of the time when it was a shogi club everywhere.
