This is a long-established Aizu-e candle shop that has been in business since the Edo period. It is located in Aizuwakamatsu's downtown, Noguchi Hideyo Seishun Street, and its quaint building, built in the Meiji period, is eye-catching. Aizu-e candles were a favorite item of upper class society during the Edo period, but over time they have become widely loved as a craft representative of the Aizu region. Traditionally, painted candles have floral patterns, but in the painting Experience, you can freely choose the pattern and color. First, you make a rough sketch, create colors on a palette, and then paint the candle. It takes 40 to 60 minutes, and you can create a one-of-a-kind painted candle.

Originally created as a replacement for Buddhist flowers, chrysanthemums and peonies have been preserved as traditional patterns, and now colorful flowers are painted according to the season. The illustrated candles have a wick made from washi paper and the wax from hazel nuts, making them environmentally and body friendly. They are also popular as interior decoration as they are soothing to look at. The illustrated candles come in nine different sizes, with the smallest one, 3 momme (approximately 15cm), recommended as a souvenir.

Cute paper mache folk crafts that represent Aizu

Akabeko can be seen all over the Aizu region. It is an adorable folk craft with its swaying head, and has become established as both a toy and a lucky charm. Akabeko are made from paper by pasting washi paper onto a handmade wooden mold, then cutting out the mold, and the neck is made to sway by hanging it from its body by a string. There are only two shops in the city that make akabeko using the paper-mache method. Bansho is one of them, and you can observe the process as they work in their workshop inside the shop. Akabeko are hand-painted, so no two have the same expression.

Draw any face or pattern you like on the bright red "Beko"

In the painting Experience, you will use the provided white and black paint, brushes, and cloth to draw expressions and patterns on the red-painted Beko. The key is to wet the brush with water and then wipe off any excess water with a cloth. Painting the areas you want to paint white first, then moving on to black will keep the brush clean and give you a beautiful finish. The paint dries in about 10 minutes, so you can paint multiple layers. The time required will vary depending on the person, but the general guideline is 40 to 50 minutes. Samples are provided, but you can imagine your favorite design and try to make your own original design.

"Aizu Koboshi" is one of the oldest folk crafts in Aizu. It is known as a lucky charm for perseverance and health because it keeps getting up no matter how many times it falls. It began about 400 years ago when the feudal lord at the time, Gamo Ujisato, had unemployed samurai make them and sold them during the New Year. Even today, every New Year in the Aizu region, locals buy one more than the number of people in their family, and display them on their Shinto altars, with the hope that their family and fortunes will increase. They are then burned at the end of the year, and are like a talisman.

Six colors of paint are provided for coloring, so you can paint the pure white koboshi doll, which is about 7cm tall, however you like. After painting one color, you can dry it with a hair dryer and then paint multiple colors. Instead of painting the belt with a brush, you can turn the koboshi doll to draw it in a straight line. Originally, only red belts were available as a talisman, but now there are also blue belts, and the number of types has increased, including the all-blue "God of Water" and all-red "God of Fire". A traditional koboshi doll is provided as a sample, but feel free to create the design you imagine.
