About the Gion Festival
The Gion Festival is an annual ritual held throughout July, centered at Yasaka Shrine, to pray for an end to epidemics. Its widely known highlights include the Yamaboko Parade and its Yoiyama (pre-festival evenings), along with the Mikoshi Togyo (portable shrine procession) on July 17 and 24. The Mikoshi Togyo is the most important religious event, involving portable shrines carried from Yasaka Shrine to Shinsen-en Garden, where they remain before returning to Yasaka Shrine. The festival has gained international recognition, designated a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property in 1979 and a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009.
