“Otaru Canal Wine Cruise” to Feature Local Wines and Sushi Pairings

-
OMO5 Otaru by Hoshino Resorts, a hotel designed for fully experiencing Otaru, will host the "Otaru Canal Wine Cruise" on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from September 1 to November 10, 2024. This cruise offers a unique opportunity to savor the marriage of local wines and sushi. In addition to wines carefully crafted to complement Otaru sushi, the cruise will feature appetizers from the locally beloved "Sushidokoro Maeda." Guests can enjoy a graceful cruise with views of the retro cityscape from a boat specially equipped with tablecloths and cushions for this program.

Background
Hokkaido boasts over 50 wineries, with numbers continuing to grow. Otaru is home to "Hokkaido Wine," which owns Japan's largest vineyard, and "Osa Winery," a small-scale winery with the concept of "happy wine." Additionally, Yoichi Town and Niki Town, located next to Otaru, are designated as "Yoichi Wine Special Zone" and "NIKI Wine Special Zone," respectively, making them thriving areas for winemaking. Furthermore, Otaru is a port town surrounded by the sea and is known as a famous sushi destination, with over 100 sushi restaurants. This program was developed with the desire for guests to enjoy the unique wines and sushi of this region while taking in the scenery of the Otaru Canal during the autumn harvest season. We will continue to offer different programs each season to provide new ways to enjoy the Otaru Canal, such as serving beer on the boat in summer and providing heated tables in winter.

Features

1Exclusive Boat for OMO5 Otaru Guests

This program features a boat specially equipped with tables and cushions for a comfortable wine-tasting experience on the Otaru Canal. During the approximately 40-minute cruise, guests can enjoy a graceful experience while taking in the autumn breeze and the historic cityscape of Otaru.

2Toast with Wine from Otaru's Small-Scale Winery "Osa Winery"

Onboard, guests will be served “tabi2022,” a white wine made from 100% “Tabiji,” a grape variety originating in Otaru. This wine is crafted to pair with Otaru sushi and features a dry taste with hints of Japanese citrus and ginger, rounded acidity, and a slight astringency amidst its refreshing character.

3Appetizer Set Featuring Sushi from Otaru's Popular "Sushidokoro Maeda"

The appetizers are sushi from “Sushidokoro Maeda,” owned by a chef from Otaru. The original set combines seasonal nigiri using salmon and shellfish that pair well with wine, along with appetizers featuring arrangements of surf clams and cream cheese. The refreshing flavor of the wine and its unique aroma reminiscent of Japanese citrus and ginger complement the seafood flavors perfectly.
