The “Igloo Outdoor Hot Spring” is located just outside the public hot spring, with views of the water garden. Its distinctive arched roof evokes the feeling of a “kamakura” snow hut, allowing guests to soak in the bath while enjoying the snowy scenery of Owani-machi, which often receives over a meter of snow in the coldest part of winter.
Across the water garden, visible from the outdoor hot spring, stand the “Kogin Kamakura,” miniature snow huts uniquely crafted from Tsugaru’s abundant winter snow. These charming structures create a magical winter scene. Inside each snow hut, a small lantern adorned with traditional Tsugaru kogin-zashi patterns casts a warm glow, echoing the lanterns floating in the nearby water garden, creating a magical ambiance throughout the snowy landscape. Guests can further enjoy the scenery unique to Tsugaru by gazing at the shining miniature snow huts while relaxing in the hot spring.
KAI Tsugaru incorporates the design of “Tsugaru kogin-zashi,” a traditional craft characterized by its beautiful symmetrical patterns, throughout the inn, including guest rooms and the “Tsugaru Four Seasons Water Garden”. In the Edo period, the farmers of Tsugaru began to apply Sashiko stitching with cotton thread to their hemp clothing, which was workwear at the time, for insulation and reinforcement, in order to make the harsh and long winters a little more comfortable. Eventually, the designs became more elaborate, and “Tsugaru kogin-zashi” was born. Lanterns with Tsugaru Nanayuki (Tsugaru’s seven types of snow) patterns created with Tsugaru kogin-zashi are installed in the water garden, which can be seen from the Kamakura Outdoor hot spring. Guests can fully enjoy the snowy landscape colored by Tsugaru culture.
