~ New guest rooms and KAI Cultural Discovery activities featuring the history and culture of Hakone ~
A new teahouse evoking Tokaido Road culture
KAI Hakone, a hot spring inn with all rooms offering river views, located in Hakone Yumoto, will reopen on August 1, 2025. While retaining the semi-open-air public hot spring that resembles a landscape painting, the inn will undergo renovations focusing on some guest rooms and public spaces. A teahouse space will also be created, transforming the inn into a place where guests can fully experience the charm of Hakone while feeling its history through its rich nature, traditional crafts, and the culture nurtured by travelers who journeyed along the Tokaido Road. The inn is closed for renovations from September 1, 2024, and reservations are scheduled to begin in mid-April 2025.
Concept: "A Hakone-style Inn Immersed in the History of the Tokaido Road"
Hakone Yumoto Onsen, with its 1200-year history, flourished as a hot spring resort along the Tokaido Road, one of the five main roads during the Edo period, soothing the fatigue of travelers journeying along the road. The Hakone route, known for its steep and challenging terrain, was lined with teahouses where weary travelers could rest. Among them, Hatajuku, located between Odawara and Hakone, thrived as a resting point and is known as the birthplace of Hakone Yosegi-zaiku wood mosaic work. Items made using a variety of woods from the mountains of Hakone with their varying elevations gained popularity as souvenirs for travelers. With this in mind, the concept of "A Hakone-style Inn Immersed in the History of the Tokaido Road" was chosen, recognizing that the allure of Hakone, including its hot springs, teahouses, and Hakone Yosegi-zaiku, is intertwined with the history of the Tokaido Road's development. Beyond the charm of Hakone Yosegi-zaiku that KAI Hakone has showcased thus far, this concept embodies the desire for guests to fully experience the profound history and traditions of Hakone by encountering the diverse culture fostered by travelers on the Tokaido Road.
A New Teahouse Space for Relaxing after a Journey
The renovation will introduce a relaxing space centered around a teahouse in the courtyard. This space is inspired by the teahouses of the Edo period, which served as places of respite for travelers to rest during their journeys. Guests can use this space throughout their stay, enjoying different activities depending on the time of day. It will be a new haven at KAI Hakone, perfect for unwinding after arrival and spending time with family and friends after dinner. Located amidst lush greenery, it offers a soothing atmosphere alongside the hot springs.
Other Renovation Details
New guest rooms incorporating the culture nurtured by travelers on the Tokaido Road are planned. Additionally, new KAI Cultural Discovery activities and a dedicated space for these activities will be introduced, allowing guests to experience the history and traditions of Hakone. Through the guest rooms, teahouse space, and KAI Cultural Discovery activities, guests can experience the essence of "Hakone-style comfort" throughout their stay.
Background of the Renovation
Hoshino Resorts has been operating KAI Hakone since 2012, welcoming numerous guests to its open-air public bath, guest rooms with views of Mount Yusaka and the Sukumo River, and the inn adorned with traditional Hakone Yosegi-zaiku. As part of the KAI brand's hospitality, which focuses on experiencing local traditional culture, the "Yosegi CHAYA" event has been held every evening, where staff share the story of Yosegi-zaiku's origins and the secrets of its crafting process. Furthermore, guests could visit the workshop of a Yosegi-zaiku artisan and experience the actual work through the local cultural experience program. Guests have praised these opportunities to engage with traditional crafts and culture during their stay. We aim for a renovation that creates an hot spring inn where guests can fully experience the charm of Hakone through their stays even more than before.Semi-open-air bath surrounded by fresh greenery
