Flying Squirrel Watching Tour

-
Picchio, a Wildlife Research Centre, based in Karuizawa, Nagano prefecture, offers a tour which allows you to observe Japanese giant flying squirrels in the wild all while learning about the species' ecology and behavior. The tour is available from March 8th until November 30th, 2024.
Picchio has been researching the flying squirrels since 1995 and so are well versed in the characteristics and movement patterns of the squirrels. With this abundant knowledge, the Picchio guides can show you the world of this fascinating species and almost guarantee you a chance of observing them for yourself.
Japanese giant flying squirrels live their whole lives in the trees and so they can only live comfortably when there is a continuous diverse and rich forest. This species therefore acts as an indicator for "forest continuity."
Picchio believes that the first step in conserving any wild animal is to not only understand their ecology but to show people the excitement of observing the animals in the wild. Generally, flying squirrels are thought to be an animal which glides but the tour aims to expand on this image and give people the opportunity to really see how this animal lives.

Features

1Over 95% sighting rate

Picchio’s long history (this year marks the 29th year since the tour began) of researching flying squirrels and running this tour has resulted in a high sighting rate of over 95% every time.
The specially designed nest boxes, used freely by the flying squirrels, have small cameras hidden inside, allowing us a window into their world. You can watch the squirrels prepare to leave their nest in the evening without disturbing them. The sighting rate was 96.89% in 2022, so you’re almost guaranteed to see these amazing animals fly!

2Guided by a professional nature guide full of knowledge

The tour begins with a short lecture introducing you to the interesting physiology and feeding habits of the flying squirrel. The passionate guide knows everything about these animals, and they will share tips on how to observe the squirrels without missing a detail. The lecture is fun and easy to understand, so even children can engage with the content and become flying squirrel-watching experts!

3Review the connection between the flying squirrels and the forest with the "Japanese giant flying squirrel note" [New for 2024!]

This year you can take notes of everything you learn during the tour with Picchio’s new interactive worksheet. Engage further with the tour’s content and share your newfound knowledge more easily with friends, family, and even teachers.

4About contributing to SDGs (sustainable development goals)

Picchio conducts a variety of nature tours, utilizing specialized knowledge gained through many years of surveying wild flora and fauna. This knowledge and experience are also passed on through environmental education programs for school groups and companies.
On this specific tour, Picchio believes that having an experienced nature guide explain the ecology of the flying squirrels and their connections with other flora and fauna will help improve people’s awareness of ecosystems and nature in general.

A bit more about Picchio
With the idea that “if we can find economic value in the forest habitat without destroying it, then we can better preserve it,” Picchio has been conducting nature tours since 1992. This mindset for preservation and protection also drives the Asiatic black bear management project, which was established by Picchio in conjunction with Karuizawa town in 1998. Since then, Picchio has collared, relocated and monitored over 300 bears and reduced conflict between people and bears through a variety of mitigation techniques. In 2019, Picchio opened another site in the National heritage site of Shiretoko in Hokkaido and again in 2021 on Iriomote island. It is hoped that providing nature tours in these other locations will help promote even more of Japan’s fantastic wildlife to an international audience.
