Celebratory Balinese experiences and new all-year experiences await international tourists this June at HOSHINOYA Bali.

Galungan and Kuningan – a Balinese celebration
Galungan (on June 8) and Kuningan (on June 18) are major festive holidays celebrated all over Bali once every 210 days on the Balinese calendar. It is a time for honoring the ancestors in family temples. Witness the mesmerizing sights of Bali as the streets of the whole island are decorated with Penjor, a tall bamboo pole decorated with flowers, coconut leaves, etc., in front of Balinese people’s homes and temples.

To encourage greater understanding and preservation of culture, HOSHINOYA Bali, with the support of the Banjar Pengembungan customary village, offers activities related to this one-of-a-kind Hindu Bali religious and cultural celebration. Experience the lively atmosphere where the scent of incense carries the feeling of devotion and locals dressed in traditional Balinese pray on this special day.

Insight into Galungan and Kuningan: One of the best times to visit Bali
Galungan symbolizes the day that spirits, notably ancestors and deities, come down from their heavenly abode and visit Earth. It celebrates the triumph of Dharma (good) over Adharma (evil). On the eve of Galungan, animals are sacrificed as special offerings, which is meant to get rid of negativity in both the Bhuana agung (the environment of the individual human being) and the Bhuana alit (the inner world of the individual human being). The meat is then used to prepare traditional Balinese dishes such as lawar and satay. The day after Galungan, people visit their families, and on Kuningan, 10 days after Galungan, the spirits will leave Earth at noon.

Kuningan means yellow and reflects the special offerings made of yellow turmeric rice given to the ancestors on this day of farewell and symbolizes man’s gratitude towards God for all the life, joy, wealth, health, and prosperity given. Most Kuningan celebrations take place in the privacy of homes, shrines of the family temples, and housing compounds.
