KAI Miyajima Unveils First Look at its Signature Ocean-View “Umigiri (Sea Fog) Rooms”

"Aji Glass," "Fukuyama Denim," and "Ōtake Washi": KAI Miyajima Signature Rooms Showcasing the Finest of Regional Culture

KAI Miyajima, opening in Summer 2026, proudly announces the official name of its ocean-view Signature Rooms: "Umigiri (Sea Fog) Rooms." Inspired by the Setouchi region’s mystical sea fog—umigiri—which forms when warm air meets the cool sea surface, these rooms capture the ethereal beauty of the landscape. Often appearing in early summer, this natural phenomenon creates a dreamlike gradation across the Seto Inland Sea’s sky, water, and island-dotted horizon. True to KAI’s signature rooms—locally inspired rooms designed to showcase regional culture— each room features sweeping sea views and traditional Setouchi crafts, offering guests an exclusive and immersive retreat.

Key Features of the "Umigiri Rooms"
1. Panoramic Window Lounge with Sea Fog Gradation

A long sofa by the window offers the perfect seat to take in the breathtaking scenery of the calm Seto Inland Sea and its islands. Framing both sides of the window, gradient curtains inspired by umigiri seamlessly blend the view with the room, creating a harmonious and immersive atmosphere.

2. Aji Glass Lighting and Traditional Plastered Walls

The room features lighting fixtures made from Aji Glass, crafted by incorporating powder from Aji stone—a premium stone from Kagawa Prefecture in the Setouchi region. Known for its serene, sea-like blue hues, Aji Glass evokes the tranquil beauty of the Seto Inland Sea. The wall behind the lighting is finished with plaster in a soft gradient, further expressing the sea’s shifting tones. Together, these artisan touches create a space that embodies the spirit of the region.

3. Cushions Made from Fukuyama Denim, a Local Textile Tradition

The sofa cushions are made from high-quality Fukuyama Denim, produced in the Bingo region centered around Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture. One of Japan’s leading denim producers, the Bingo area has a textile heritage rooted in the traditional craft of Bingo Kasuri, dating back to the Edo period. This legacy lives on in the denim’s deep indigo color and distinctive fading, created through advanced dyeing techniques.

4. Elements Inspired by Setouchi’s Fishing Culture and Handcrafted Ōtake Washi

A mesh-patterned table near the window is modeled after biku—traditional baskets once used by local fishermen—bringing a touch of Setouchi’s fishing culture into the room. Behind the bed, walls are decorated with Ōtake Washi, a handmade paper crafted for over 400 years in Ōtake City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Made exclusively from locally sourced kōzo (mulberry bark), this strong, supple, and bright white wall paper softly illuminates the space, adding a delicate, regional touch.

About the Hot Spring Experience at KAI Miyajima

In addition to its all ocean-view guest rooms, KAI Miyajima offers a range of immersive bathing experiences that celebrate the history and culture of the Setouchi region. These include a top-floor public bath with sweeping views of the sea and mountains, as well as a unique hot spring area that reimagines the traditional ishiburo (stone bath), a practice long rooted in the Setouchi area—all designed to engage the senses and connect guests with the spirit of the region.
