Property Details: Hoshino Resorts KAI Izumo

A Hot Spring Inn Offering Ritual Purification and Stunning Views of the Lighthouse and Horizon

Situated at the western tip of the Shimane Peninsula, Hoshino Resorts KAI Izumo sits within the "Sacred Land of the Setting Sun." This refined onsen ryokan offers sweeping views of the Sea of Japan and the iconic Hinomisaki Lighthouse. Whether watching the lighthouse glow at dusk or the waves shimmer at dawn, guests are immersed in the region's natural beauty. Perfectly positioned for spiritual exploration, the resort is a five-minute stroll from Hinomisaki Shrine and 20 minutes from the legendary Izumo Grand Shrine. Here, the "strong salt" hot springs provide a traditional purification ritual, cleansing the mind and body in preparation for worship.

Public Hot Spring: Panoramic Views of the Sea of JapanThe Hinomisaki area is characterized by a rugged coastline capped by a white lighthouse against the crashing waves of the Sea of Japan. The public hot spring offers an expansive bathing experience overlooking the sea. The waters are classified as a strong sodium-chloride spring, which creates a salt veil over the skin to retain heat long after the bath. The indoor public bath includes both a high-temperature bath and a lukewarm bath supplied by a free-flowing spring source. Symbolizing the "purifying salt" of the sea, these baths are recommended as a misogi (ritual purification) before visiting the local shrines.

Dining: Seasonal Flavors and Spiritual PreparationMatsuba Crab LighthouseCrab Rice

From November to March, when the crab fishing season opens, KAI Izumo serves the "Yakumo Matsuba Crab Kaiseki". This Special Kaiseki course features eight dishes, a number inspired by the "Yakumo" (eight clouds) of local mythology. The highlight is the "Matsuba Crab Lighthouse," where crab meat is stacked high in its shell to resemble the Hinomisaki Lighthouse. To elevate the umami and saltiness, the crab is served alongside caviar and sea urchin. For breakfast, the "Shinsen Breakfast" is modeled after food offerings made to the gods (shinsen) and is served in vessels designed to symbolize good fortune and the forging of new connections.Breakfast

KAI Signature Rooms: The "Saikai" RoomsLighthouse View Room

All 39 guest rooms are KAI Signature Rooms titled "Saikai-no-Ma" (Rooms of Colorful Seas), named to reflect the shifting colors of the sky and sea.

  • Lighthouse View Rooms: These west-facing rooms offer views of the setting sun and Hinomisaki Lighthouse. The interiors feature indigo accents—a complementary color to the orange of the sunset—to make the evening glow appear more vivid.
  • Sea View Rooms: The east-facing rooms are designed to showcase the sunrise. These rooms are decorated in soft pink tones using traditional Sekishu Washi (Japanese paper) from Shimane. Each room incorporates works by local artisans and features headboards designed to evoke the horizon line.

KAI Cultural Discovery: Kagura - Traditional Regional Theater
Shimane serves as the backdrop for numerous Japanese myths and remains a region where Kagura—a traditional performing art used to welcome the gods—flourishes. At KAI Izumo, staff members perform Theatrical Dance Iwami Kagura. The program features a myth depicting the origins of the Izumo Grand Shrine. The performance is characterized by powerful music, ornate costumes, and dramatic mid-battle costume changes.

Architectural Highlights and Shared Spaces

  • Kawatare Terrace
KAI Izumo features a terrace in its most open area, providing guests with unobstructed views of the scattered islands and the distant horizon of the Sea of Japan. This outdoor space is an extension of the Travel Library, offering a serene environment where guests can enjoy a drink or browse books on local culture while watching the light shift across the water. It is a premier location to experience the transition of the sky from the first light of dawn through the setting sun.

  • Front Desk
The entrance features a striking art installation that evokes the sun setting over the Sea of Japan. It is crafted using high-quality steel and iron slag, both produced through "Tatara"—a traditional ironmaking method native to the region. By showcasing the polished steel alongside the raw slag (a byproduct of the forging process), the piece celebrates the local heritage of craftsmanship and the harmony between light and shadow.

  • Sekishu Tile Benches

The KAI Cultural Discovery hall features benches made of Sekishu-gawara, the reddish roof tiles iconic to Shimane. Fired at temperatures exceeding 1,300 degrees Celsius, these tiles are renowned for their durability and distinct coloration.
