“PRISON BY NIGHT: Light & Echoes” — Limited Special Nighttime Museum Event Starting December 4, 2026

Experience a unique winter night tour of the Former Nara Prison, an Important Cultural Property, brought to life after dark with spellbinding light and sound installations.

Nara Prison Museum by Hoshino Resorts, a museum guided by the concept “An Eternal Question Posed by an Iconic Prison, ” will host its first nighttime event, "PRISON BY NIGHT: Light & Echoes," from December 4, 2026 to January 31, 2027. Under the theme "When Night Falls, the Prison Speaks," the event illuminates the striking architecture of the Former Nara Prison—an Important Cultural Property. Across the courtyard and the 48-cell solitary wing, dynamic light installations, projection art, and soundscapes allow guests to experience over a century of heritage from a compelling new perspective. Through the creation of nighttime entertainment, the event aims to contribute to both the preservation of cultural properties and the local economy. Advance ticket reservations will begin on October 8.

Three Key Highlights of "PRISON BY NIGHT: Light & Echoes"

The Former Nara Prison undergoes a complete transformation at night from its daytime appearance. From red-brick architecture illuminated against the dark, to light and soundscapes artfully coloring the solitary cells, to moments in the courtyard where visitors' inner thoughts surface—guests journey through a nighttime world told in three stages: seeing, imagining, and reflecting.

1. “Seeing”
A nighttime world of light reveals the sharp contours, rich red-brick textures, and dramatic shadows of this iconic Meiji-era structure. Surrounded by this play of light and shadow, guests can experience the grandeur and timeless beauty of a building with more than 100 years of heritage.

2. “Imagining”
Across the preservation wing—where 48 solitary cells line a 60-meter hallway—light installations, projection art, and soundscapes transform the venue. Visuals of white birds soaring into a deep blue sky span the entire ceiling, while soft yellow lights and vivid red geometric patterns project rhythmically across heavy cell doors and brick walls. This delicate play of light and shadow overlays the stark architecture of the historic prison while faint sounds resonate down the corridor, bringing the building to life. Beyond visual art, this three-dimensional experience encourages visitors to imagine the site's past and reflect on the daily lives once spent within its walls.

3. “Reflecting”
Concluding the main exhibition space, the "Musubi Room" (Room of Connection) has hosted the "Prison Postcard Project" since its opening, inviting visitors to deposit their personal reflections into a dedicated mailbox. This event introduces the outdoor "Musubi no Hiroba" (Plaza of Connection), projecting a selection of the 5,000+ collected thoughts directly onto the surrounding red-brick walls. These real visitor messages emerge as vivid "letters of light," carrying diverse human emotions—from gratitude and hope to sorrow and love. As these reflections connect and echo into the future, they envelop the courtyard in an enchanting nighttime display.

A New Winter Sweet: Limited-time menu "Zenzai Hot Chocolate"
During its years as Nara Juvenile Prison, zenzai (sweet red bean soup) was an exceptionally popular winter staple. Inspired by this piece of local history, the new Zenzai Hot Chocolate offers a creative twist—blending the rich depth of hot cocoa with the delicate sweetness of traditional red bean soup. Finished with smooth cream, chocolate accents, and a cookie featuring the museum's official emblem, this comforting winter treat invites guests to savor a taste of history.

Toward the Preservation and Utilization of the Former Nara Prison and Solutions to Nara's Tourism Challenges
Going beyond nighttime entertainment, this event aims to contribute to both the preservation of cultural properties and the local economy.

  1. Sustainable Preservation and Utilization of Cultural Properties
This event utilizes the Agency for Cultural Affairs FY2026 "Cultural Resource Utilization Project Subsidy (Project to Promote the Utilization of Attractive Cultural Properties Throughout Japan)(*)". By utilizing the Important Cultural Property during night hours, new visiting opportunities are created, and by allocating the generated revenue toward maintenance and management, we aim to lead to the sustainable preservation and utilization of the Former Nara Prison.

  2. Solving Nara's Tourism Challenges (Creation of Nighttime Economy)
While Nara Prefecture is one of Japan's leading tourist destinations possessing numerous attractive historic heritage sites, it faces a long-standing challenge where nighttime tourist content is scarce, making day trips the primary travel pattern. By holding this event, the museum creates a new experience where visitors can enjoy at night, encouraging tourists to stay overnight, thereby contributing to the revitalization of Nara's nighttime economy and the resolution of tourism challenges.
Additionally, in line with the event, direct buses providing smooth access from the city center will be operated. By establishing a comfortable access environment from main stations, more people can thoroughly enjoy night in Nara without hesitation.
