Recycling waste cooking oil into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) – Starting April 17, 2024

The recycling operation will first be implemented in OMO Kansai Airport by Hoshino Resorts
Hoshino Resorts (Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture/ CEO: Yoshiharu Hoshino) currently operates 69 establishments in and outside Japan. JGC HOLDINGS CORPORATION (Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture / Chairman&CEO: Masayuki Sato), REVO International Inc. (Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture / CEO: Tetsuya Koshikawa) and SAFFAIRE SKY ENERGY (Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture / CEO: Masahiro Aika) will start together on April 17, 2024 an operation to recycle waste cooking oil into "Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)." Hoshino Resorts will contribute by providing the waste cooking oil from its operating properties. The recycling operation will first be implemented at OMO Kansai Airport, an airport hotel located in Rinku Town Station, just one station away from Kansai International Airport, and will gradually be extended to other Hoshino Resorts properties inside Japan.

What is Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)?
Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) designates fuels made from non-fossil fuels such as waste cooking oil, vegetable and animal fats, and wood based biomass. It can significantly reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions compared to conventional fuels made from crude oil. If the fuel is 100% made of waste cooking oil, CO2 emissions can be reduced by approximately 80% compared to conventional aviation fuels, from raw material collection to fuel production and combustion.

Background of the initiative
As climate change is rapidly evolving and more actions are taken around the globe, SAF, an effective mean of reducing CO2 emissions, is becoming more important than ever in the aviation industry. The Japanese government aims for SAF to reach a 10% ratio of aviation fuel by 2030 (*1), but to meet this goal, a stable supply for domestic SAF is essential. However, securing raw materials in Japan is an issue as much of the waste cooking oil that could be recycled is discarded or exported overseas. In order to bring a solution to this problem, the four companies worked together to implement an operation to recycle waste cooking oil generated in properties operated by Hoshino Resorts into sustainable fuel. Kansai Airport Co., Ltd. (Izumisano City, Osaka Prefecture/ President and CEO: Yoshiyuki Yamaya), which operates three airports in the Kansai region (Kansai International Airport, Osaka International Airport, and Kobe Airport), asked Hoshino Resorts to cooperate in this initiative.

Contents of the Initiative
Hoshino Resorts
Hoshino Resorts will participate by providing waste cooking oil from its operating properties. The operation will start with OMO Kansai Airport in April 2024, and the group aims to gradually expand this initiative to other Hoshino Resorts facilities inside Japan. The collected waste cooking oil will first be recycled and stored as a raw material for biodiesel in REVO International Inc. facilities in 2024 and then used in the production of biofuel in a SAF production plant scheduled to start operation in early 2025.

SAF structure under construction

JGC HOLDINGS CORPORATION
JGC HOLDINGS CORPORATION will build the entire supply chain for the waste cooking oil-based SAF manufacturing business (a joint undertaking of Cosmo Oil Co., Ltd. and REVO International Inc. Co., Ltd.). The waste cooking oil provided will be delivered to SAFFAIRE SKY ENERGY, a joint venture established by JGC Holdings in collaboration with Cosmo Oil and REVO International Inc. to manufacture the biofuel. This project is supported by the NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization) (*1).

REVO International Inc. Co., Ltd
REVO International Inc. will collect waste cooking oil generated at Hoshino Resorts properties and deliver it to SAFFAIRE SKY ENERGY. By controlling the collection status of waste cooking oil purchased from Hoshino Resorts, the amounts actually collected and delivered to SAFFAIRE SKY ENERGY will ensure the traceability of waste cooking oil.

Collection of waste cooking oil

Kansai Airport Co., Ltd.
In 2022, Kansai Airport Co., Ltd., with JGC Holdings, Revo International, and SAFFAIRE SKY ENERGY signed the "Basic Agreement on Cooperation for Mass Production of Domestic SAF". With the aim of realizing the first large-scale production of domestic SAF in 2025 and achieving a "local production for local consumption" for SAF, Kansai Airport Co. has been making efforts to publicize the bio-fuel importance and encouraging airports, local restaurants, hotels, schools, and local residents to collect waste cooking oil. This initiative that includes OMO Kansai Airport by Hoshino Resorts was created in response to this call.
