Using nature's blessings to make the winters cozy
In Karuizawa, kerosene is used for heating to survive the winter cold. However, HOSHINOYA has introduced a heating system that utilizes the underground heat of the area where the hot spring emerges, achieving a winter without relying on fossil fuels.
Something we've been doing for over 100 years
Hoshino Onsen Ryokan, the predecessor of HOSHINOYA Karuizawa, succeeded in generating water turbines shortly after its opening in 1917, and hydroelectric power in 1929. It still supplies electricity from the on-site power plant.
Energy In My Yard (EIMY)
EIMY generates as much energy as possible on-site. About 70% energy self-sufficiency is achieved through hydroelectric power and geothermal systems.
Beautiful river flows generate energy
The river flowing through the resort village also serves as a downstream regulating pond for the hydroelectric power plant. It also creates a riparian view surrounded by the murmur of the streams.
