Festivals that embody the island's communal spirit
On Taketomi Island, residents live with the importance of connection with the gods and festivals dedicated to gods. More than 20 festivals are held annually, making them an integral part of life on the island.
The largest festival on the island ”Tanadui”
The 600-year-old Tanadui Festival takes place over 10 days and features over 80 traditional performing arts dedicated to the gods. Even people who now live outside the island return during this period to pray for their offspring's prosperity and good harvests.
The entire island prepares for the festival
The islanders cherish performing arts dedicated to the gods, such as songs, dances, and Kyogen (Japanese classical comic theater) and gather every evening to practice as the festival approaches. They also make offerings called "Iiyachi" by cooking glutinous rice, millet, and red beans.
The only event that travelers can attend
During the Tanadui Festival's final two days, there is a dedication performance called "Yuukui," in which people wear headbands and visit houses while singing at night. Travelers can also join, making it the only opportunity to attend the festival.
