The Hotel Awards is an annual award announced by National Geographic Traveller (UK) to award the best new hotels around the world. With 14 categories in total, which includes a winner and two runners-up, winners of each category were carefully selected by the National Geographic Traveller (UK) team and travel writers and editors. KAI Poroto was selected as the hotel with the best design with “the most striking stay conjured by architects and interior experts.” *1

Located in Shiraoi, Hokkaido, it is characterized by the design in which Lake Poroto is boldly drawn into the premise, and all guest rooms face this still lake, which changes its appearance with each season. With respect to Ainu culture and the Ainu people, indigenous to Hokkaido, the architecture, art, and décor of the property were designed. For example, the bathhouse was inspired by “ketunni,” where a tripod structure using log is its basic structure, and guests are invited to enjoy a moor spring that contains organic minerals derived from plants and is rare among the world.
