A French dining experience under the starry sky – HOSHINOYA Taketomi Island

A unique gastronomic experience and a feast for the eyes and taste buds

HOSHINOYA Taketomi Island offers a special summer dinner from July 1st to September 30th, 2024. Guests can enjoy this French-style dinner under a sky full of stars with a view of the village. This time-limited event encountered much success last year, and some new features were added to this year’s program. This year, participants will be served an aperitif in their rooms before dinner, at the time when the evening stars will appear in the sky. The sky will gradually darken as time for dinner approaches and guests’ anticipation grows. This one-of-a-kind experience will allow them to experience special dishes under a beautiful starry sky and in the unique landscape of the village.
Background
Taketomi Island of the Yaeyama Islands is the first island in Japan to be recognized as an International Dark Sky Place(*1). 84 out of the 88 constellations are visible from the island, and all of the 21 first-magnitude stars can be observed at night in this unique environment. To maintain the darkness of the sky and keep a beautiful view of the starry sky, HOSHINOYA Taketomi Island has no overhead lighting. The guest rooms, pathways, and gardens of HOSHINOYA Taketomi Island were all designed based on the island's landscape, with no electricity poles or tall buildings obstructing the view, so guests could enjoy an open landscape. This special under-the-night sky dinner will be back this year with more features to enjoy the night sky before dinner time and a meal that will become the highlight of the trip.

Feature 1: NEW! “Waiting for the stars” Aperitif Time
Finger food and drinks will be served in the guest room’s garden before dinner. During the aperitif time, the sun will set, and guests can enjoy the dusk atmosphere as it gradually gets darker. As the night slowly takes over, stars will light up one after the other, making it a magical moment to enjoy with a glass of rose champagne, tartare with aged corn beef, and octopus terrine. This will be a smooth transition time to enjoy the beauty of the shifting sky as it transforms into a night full of stars by dinner time.

Feature 2: Immersion in a one-of-a-kind scenery
The gazebo space will be privatized for the special dinner, with an expansive view of the HOSHINOYA Taketomi Island village landscape under a sky full of stars. Following the traditional architecture of Taketomi Island, all guest rooms are wooden one-story buildings with no tall buildings or utility poles to block the view. The lighting is adapted and designed with care for guests to enjoy the starry sky. Those arrangements create a dark environment and enhance the beauty of the night sky with myriads of stars. Finally, the gazebo is the only space in HOSHINOYA Taketomi Island that offers a panoramic view of the village landscape with its traditional red-tiled houses.

Feature 3: French cuisine for a special evening
A five-course dinner will be served using ingredients beloved by islanders, such as tiger prawns or mangos. This splendid dinner includes a variety of dishes that can only be enjoyed in the southern part of the country, making for a unique experience. HOSHINOYA Taketomi Island’s French cuisine is an award-winning experience (*2) and all dishes served were thought and created by the chef using all his experience and expertise. This truly unique French cuisine dining experience under the starry sky is a one-time-in-a-year opportunity, as it is usually served indoors in the restaurant.
