Imagining a modernized Japan that embraces its regional cultures and customs
HOSHINOYA Karuizawa was established in the valley of the Karuizawa Hoshino Area, where the Yukawa River flows, in an attempt to renovate the Hoshino Onsen Hotel, which has been in operation for more than 90 years. Hoshino, the representative of the hotel, wrote a series of articles called "The Valley Plan" to convey his thoughts on the project.
It started with "The Valley Plan".
In the process of Japan's modernization, the driving force behind the launch of "The Valley Plan" was the thought: "What would our lives and the surrounding landscape be like if we had been able to promote modernization while valuing more Japaneseness?"
Envisioning "An alternative Japan"
"An alternative Japan" that we envision is an imaginary state that has modernized itself in accordance with the times while valuing the unique values, ecosystems, and cultures that have been nurtured here over many years.
Trees color the Resort Village
During the construction of HOSHINOYA, about 700 trees were transplanted and protected from where the building was built. When it was completed, they were returned, and the long-aged trees gently covered the site. Gardeners continue to protect the landscape.
