Toji Lotus Morning Tour

An Early Morning Tour

In the Toji area, which boasts 1,200 years of history since the founding of Heian-kyo and is home to a peaceful temple town, we invite you to experience the breathtaking view of lotus flowers at the World Heritage site, Toji Temple—a stunning sight that can only be witnessed during the summer.

Lotus Flowers

In the crisp morning air, an OMO Ranger will guide you through the stunning scenery of Toji Temple's lotus pond and the iconic Five-Story Pagoda—a view that can only be captured during summer mornings. You will learn about the history of Toji Temple and the deep connection between Kobo Daishi Kukai and the lotus flower, allowing you to enjoy a soul-cleansing moment from the early hours. At the end of the tour, we will stop by "Toji Mochiya," a traditional sweet shop located near the temple, where you can enjoy some shopping.

Savor the Tea

After paying your respects, we will serve refreshing iced sencha (green tea) that pairs perfectly with your Toji Mochi. This is inspired by Japan's tea culture, which is said to have originated when Kukai brought tea leaves back from Tang Dynasty China. The sweet red bean paste (anko) generously packed inside the Toji Mochi has long been cherished as a "red" ingredient believed to ward off evil spirits. Eating it carries the meaning of expelling the summer heat and warding off bad luck to stay healthy during the season. It is the perfect way to calm both your mind and body while soaking in the lingering memories of the beautiful lotus flowers.

Cooling Items

To accompany your early morning visit, each of our three properties offers a rental selection of cooling items that local Kyoto residents use in their daily lives. We will support your summer morning activities with items unique to Kyoto, such as summer-inspired uchiwa (Japanese paper fans) that bring a sense of coolness to the eyes, and Kyoto handmade candy that is perfect for replenishing salt.
