Spring Project "Weaving Voices"
Spring is the season when living things gradually begin to stir from the silent world of winter. Seasonal words in Japan, such as Keichitsu (the awakening of insects), Shunrai (spring thunder), and Saezuri (the chirping of birds), are colored by the many "sounds" and "voices" that invite the world to awaken into a gentle peace. The voices of the trees, the voices of living creatures, and the voices of people. This spring, we will listen closely to the various "voices" that exist all around us. Through play and imagination, children will deepen their own inquiry into these "voices."
Listening to the Voices
Using tools like stethoscopes that respond to subtle sounds, we will try to listen to the "voices" of living things, such as plants and insects. Furthermore, by closely observing the movements and gestures of these creatures, we may notice their unique ways of communicating and expand our imagination regarding their forms of expression.
Playing with Voices
You can try recording your own voice and listening back to it, layering your recorded voice using a sound machine, or controlling the sound quality to create original sounds and rhythms. When your freely transforming voice begins to sound like a completely new "sound," you might discover the hidden charm of your own "voice."
Voices and Forms
Not only sounds and movements, but also "drawings" and "letters" can become "voices" that convey something to others. By arranging drawings that seem to emit sounds or combining hiragana cards, what kind of "voice" images will children create?
In our daily lives, we primarily use our "voices" to communicate. However, there are moments when we can enjoy time together and feel a connection without needing words or speech. In this spring project, we will use "voice" as a medium for play, enjoying the acts of conveying, listening, and imagining as we deepen our inquiry. Together with the children, we will explore the question, "What is a voice?" It is our hope that this will be a time for everyone to weave their very own "voices."
