Nyepi 2026 at HOSHINOYA Bali

"Nyepi": Bali's Sacred Day of Silence

Nyepi is the Hindu New Year in Bali and is observed as a public holiday in Indonesia. Within the country, the celebrations held in Bali are the largest in scale. In 2026, Nyepi will take place on March 19th.

The Day of Silence: Experience Nyepi at Hoshinoya Bali

On this day, the airport closes, and no one is allowed outside—not even tourists. Communication and electricity are restricted as the island falls into total silence. While it may seem inconvenient, Nyepi holds a deep spiritual meaning. We invite you to discover how to spend this sacred time at HOSHINOYA Bali.

Ogoh Ogoh Parade

Approximately three days before Nyepi, Balinese Hindus journey to the shores of seas, rivers, or lakes, carrying traditional Balinese musical instruments and numerous offerings. This ritual, known as "Melasti," is a ceremony of purification for both the deities and the people themselves.

Once purified, the day before Nyepi is marked by "Ogoh-Ogoh," an exorcism ritual held in every village. In 2026, this will take place on March 18th. Giant papier-mâché statues representing evil spirits are paraded through the streets accompanied by loud music, and finally burned to drive away negative energies and prepare for a sacred New Year.

Guests staying at HOSHINOYA Bali are invited to don traditional "Sarong" attire and join the local village's Ogoh-Ogoh parade.

Nyepi - The Day of Silence -

Following the vibrant energy of the Ogoh-Ogoh, a profound silence descends as Nyepi begins. In 2026, Nyepi lasts for 24 hours starting from 6:00 AM on March 19th. During this time, everyone on the island—including visitors—is expected to observe the rules known as Catur Brata Penyepian.

To foster harmony between the Divine, humanity, and nature, all individuals refrain from leaving their homes, using fire or electricity, and engaging in entertainment. While local security guards (Pecalang) patrol the villages to ensure order, the entire island of Bali remains in total serenity, allowing for a sacred and solemn start to the New Year.

From 6:00 AM on the day Nyepi ends, it is called Ngembak Geni, a day when everything returns to normal. In 2026, Ngembak Geni begins after 6:00 AM on March 20th.
