Serene Winter Incense Stay
Discover the Heian aristocratic scent culture during an elegant winter stay in serene Arashiyama.
Yamada Matsukōboku, a Kyoto incense shop, creates traditional incense balls by blending powdered incense with honey and plum paste. In the Heian period, incense making symbolized refinement and status among the aristocracy.
Even in the Heian period, people used tools that imbued kimono with fragrance to coat letters and clothing. At bedtime, people put incense pillows by their bedsides and fall asleep while being comforted by the fragrance.
The next morning, aboard the Jade at HOSHINOYA Kyoto, visitors enjoy the winter valley view while savoring the lingering fragrance, reminiscent of the Heian court nobles' love for Arashiyama's scenery and incense culture.
