KAI Cultural Discovery

The Ainu like to bring on their body a plant called “Ikema” as a charm to ward off evil. In this workshop, you will learn how to make your very own accessory to ward off evil by combining this Ikema and several types of herbs from Hokkaido.
*Every KAI establishment offers a selection of free activities designed to introduce guests to Japan’s regional cultures.
Upopoy Park guided tour by KAI Poroto staff

KAI Poroto hot spring ryokan inn in Shiraoi, Hokkaido has started offering tours of neighboring Upopoy Park on December 1st, 2023. Upopoy Park showcases Ainu culture as a symbol of coexistence with different ethnic groups. Guests staying at KAI Poroto can take the tour on the day after check-in. You can learn more about local Ainu culture.
Kotan village evening fire gathering

Fire is cherished by the Ainu people. While sitting around the fire, enjoy local drinks, snacks, and finger food. We will show a slightly different way to enjoy alcoholic beverages that connects to the spirit of the Ainu culture.
Sankaku-no-yu

Built based on the unique Ainu architecture, “Ketunni”, you can enjoy the 2 types of hot springs, the “Atsu-yu” which is the original hot spring water, and the warm “Nuruyu” that will calm down your body and soul.
Maru-no-yu
- Availability：

In contrast to the open “Sankaku-no-yu” that is located on the lake, the “Maru-no-yu” feels like you are inside a cave. There is a hole on the dome ceiling to connect with the outside, through which gentle sunbeams shine.
KAI Massage
- Availability：

We offer highly therapeutic massages by nationally certified staff. After bathing, blood circulation is improved and the body can relax more easily. A massage before dinner also helps with digestion.
