OMO7 Yokohama opens on April 21, 2026: Redefining the “Yokohama Experience” Through a Fusion of Heritage and Modernity

OMO7 Yokohama by Hoshino Resorts is pleased to unveil the full details of its upcoming property ahead of its grand opening on April 21, 2026.
The hotel will be part of BASEGATE Yokohama Kannai, a redevelopment project on the former site of Yokohama City Hall, located in front of JR Kannai Station. It incorporates the historic Yokohama City Hall Administrative Building, designed by Togo Murano, a leading Showa-era architect who greatly influenced the nation’s modern architecture. Under the concept of “Groove to Yokohama-ism,” OMO7 Yokohama blends the city’s rich history and culture with contemporary sensibilities—creating a space where old and new harmoniously meet.

Concept: “Groove to Yokohama-ism”
Since opening as a port city in 1859, Yokohama has thrived as a meeting point of Japanese and international cultures. As Japan’s gateway to the West, the city has long led trends in fashion, culture, and lifestyle—a source of pride for Yokohama locals, or “Hamakkos.” This spirit of embracing new ideas while honoring tradition—known as “Yokohama-ism”—defines the city. OMO7 Yokohama celebrates this charm through experiences ranging from the exotic atmosphere of Chinatown and historic Western-style buildings to beloved restaurants, lively bars, and seaside strolls. With its concept of “Groove to Yokohama-ism,” the hotel invites guests to enjoy the city’s cheerful, free-spirited energy like a true Hamakko.

Completed in 1959 as part of the Yokohama Port Centennial Project, the former City Hall, designed by renowned architect Togo Murano, served for over 60 years as the administrative heart of the city and a familiar landmark. The Administrative Building will remain on its original site and be reborn as its legacy, creating a new hub for residents and visitors. In August 2025, it became the first postwar structure designated as a Historic Building by the City of Yokohama, recognizing its enduring role as a local symbol while blending tradition with modernity. OMO7 Yokohama will carry forward the city’s collective memory and contribute to the vibrancy of the Kannai district.More information: A New Chapter for Yokohama’s Former City Hall: OMO7 Yokohama Design Preview

The "OMO Base": A Public Space Bridging Past and PresentAt the heart of the hotel’s social scene is the OMO Base, featuring a symbolic grand staircase that connects the first and second floors. This architectural centerpiece reimagines the iconic staircase of the original Citizen’s Hall, incorporating the original smooth, curved handrails—a signature of Togo Murano’s design language. On the second floor, guests can relax in seating repurposed from the former City Council Chamber. These dignified chairs, once occupied by city representatives, have been transformed into a sophisticated lounge area for guests to unwind.

The "Yokohama-ism Collection": Touching the History of Yokohama
The OMO Base also hosts the "Yokohama-ism Collection," an exhibition dedicated to the 60-year legacy of the former Yokohama City Hall and the cultural evolution of the city. Guests can interact with authentic artifacts, including original carpets from the City Council Chamber, handrails from the Citizen’s Hall, and Murano-designed clocks. The historical elements up close offer a temporal journey, enriching the guest’s exploration of both the hotel and the surrounding city streets.Yokohama-ism Collection

Typographic Legacy: The "Numeral Design" Project
In a meticulous tribute to Murano’s vision, the hotel has preserved and expanded upon the original floor-number signage designed by the architect. This unique typography has been integrated into elevator buttons, floor signs, and guest room numbers.
As the original set lacked the digits "0" and "9," the project sought the expertise of Shiro Suzuki—a former collaborator of Murano at Murano & Mori Architects—introduced through Tomoko Murano of the Togo Murano Archives. Under their supervision, Suzuki crafted the missing digits by channeling Murano’s aesthetic philosophy. This detailed design initiative embodies the hotel's core renovation theme: "Historical Succession and the Fusion of Old and New.""Togo Murano: Numerical Design" (Materials courtesy of the Museum of Kyoto Institute of Technology; Reference No. AN.5206-58; Drawing title: "Full-scale clock numerals")"Designs for '0' and '9' by Shiro Suzuki" (Materials courtesy of "MURANO design")Guest room number signage

Unique Guestrooms with Eye-catching Theme Colors
The hotel features 276 guest rooms across nine distinct types, with floor plans ranging from 20 to 73 square meters to accommodate a variety of travel needs. Each room is defined by a specific shade of red, blue, or green, directly inspired by the original interior of the former Yokohama City Hall. The red tones reflect the carpeting of the former Chairperson’s Office, while the blue draws from the lustrous porcelain tiles used throughout the building. The green accents pay homage to the dignified atmosphere of the former City Council Chamber, mirroring its original carpets and seating.Double room

Among the diverse room types is the "Yagura Suite," a multi-level space designed for up to six guests. This suite utilizes both width and height to create an expansive environment where families and groups of friends can gather comfortably in a single, shared space. For those seeking a social atmosphere, the "Katariba Room" accommodates up to four guests and is centered around a large sofa perfect for late night talking. Whether used as a spacious retreat for two or a lively base for a group of four, these rooms offer a specialized stay that captures the essence of Yokohama. By providing a wide range of unique room types, OMO7 Yokohama ensures a tailored experience for every traveler and every occasion.Katariba roomYagura suite

The Go-KINJO Map: A Curated Guide to the City’s Hidden Gems
The "Go-KINJO Map" is an original, localized resource compiled by the "OMO Rangers"—hotel staff who are passionate about the city and have personally scouted every recommendation, often gathering insider tips directly from local residents. The map features a curated selection of spots across diverse neighborhoods, including the international atmosphere of Kannai, the iconic streets of Yokohama Chinatown, and the historic, hidden restaurants of Noge. On this tour, an OMO Ranger leads guests through historical fragments and architectural designs that are often overlooked by standard sightseeing. The experience concludes with an in-depth exploration of Togo Murano’s architectural beauty within the hotel itself, showcasing the meticulous craftsmanship that defines this fusion of old and new. This journey through Yokohama’s storied past fosters a profound appreciation for both the city and its landmark buildings. The Noge Bar Hopping Selection: Navigating Yokohama’s Deep Culinary Scene
To navigate the legendary culinary scene of Noge—located just a 15-minute walk from the hotel and boasting nearly 600 eateries—the hotel presents the "Noge Hopping Selection." In this activity, OMO Rangers hand-pick exceptional establishments from the vast array of local shops to help guests find the perfect spot. To make the bar hopping experience even more enjoyable, the hotel provides original shop cards filled with expert recommendations. The evening festivities culminate in "Yokohama Grooving Night”, a vibrant event held as part of the OMO brand’s "Local Rhythm Night" series. Hosted on the "HAMAKAZE Terrace"—a sprawling 45-meter rooftop space repurposed from the former city hall—the event offers a festival-like atmosphere cooled by the sea breeze. The terrace features an observation deck with panoramic views, plush sofas for lounging, and dining tables for a complete social experience. Guests can enjoy craft beers and exclusive local snacks while listening to a variety of music, including jazz with deep ties to Yokohama’s history. Whether lying back to groove to the melody or gazing at the city lights, this activity offers a spirited and customizable way to celebrate your night in Yokohama.

"THE LEGACY OF YOKOHAMA": An Exclusive ZINE for Hotel Guests

A new zine has been created to help guests more deeply appreciate the heritage of the former Yokohama City Hall, an iconic symbol of the city's history. This publication offers an extensive look at the interior of OMO7 Yokohama, which preserves and repurposes the original City Hall administrative building. Inside, we carefully unveil the "heart-fluttering" details of the design—a seamless fusion of old and new—alongside the hidden history and untold stories of the building’s renowned architect, Togo Murano. The ZINE also features unique perspectives from three individuals who have been involved with the former City Hall in various ways over the years. By exploring the hotel with this ZINE in hand, you will begin to see the space in a whole new light. It is a special volume where the legacy of the architecture and the emotions of the people who knew it intersect, leaving you with a deeper affection for the hotel by the final page.
